The exhilarating universe of Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is about to become even more dynamic with the introduction of Subclassing. This upcoming feature will empower players to expand their gameplay beyond the confines of their initial class, allowing for an exciting range of customization and character development. This unique system is reminiscent of Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs), which captivated gaming enthusiasts by allowing boundless role-playing possibilities.
Understanding Subclassing in ESO highlights both its simplicity and its complexity. Players will gain access to a broad array of options upon unlocking this feature, yet effectively managing skill points and ability restrictions will provide a strategic challenge. As a fan eagerly anticipating this addition, let’s delve deeper into what Subclassing entails!
Unlocking Character Depth with Subclassing
With the arrival of the Subclassing system, players will finally experience the freedom to create a character that truly embodies the spirit of the Elder Scrolls franchise. One of the core appeals of this series is the emphasis on player agency; subclasses will enhance this by allowing individuals to experiment with different Skill Lines, ultimately crafting diverse gameplay experiences without the need to start over.

The demand for more versatility within class structures has long been echoed by players, and Subclassing provides a fulfilling solution. This feature enables players to explore skill sets from various classes without the disruption of re-rolling. The developers are attuned to the emotional investment players have in their main characters, thus creating a pathway for combat diversification while maintaining attachments to established avatars.
Getting started with Subclassing is straightforward: simply reach level 50. This milestone opens the door to add and remove Skill Lines across your account. Typically, players will access Skill Lines from already utilized classes, but there are mechanisms in place to unlock other Skill Lines, enhancing accessibility for those who have primarily focused on a single character.
It is important to note that accessing certain Skill Lines, such as those from the Arcanist, Necromancer, and Warden classes, requires owning the associated expansions. To ensure balance within gameplay, some skills may require two Skill Points instead of one, promoting strategic investment and thoughtful character building.

Imagine delightfully chaotic combinations, like blending the elemental fury of Elementalist with the warrior prowess of Dragonknight! Perhaps you envision a unique build that draws on the nature skills of Warden, paired creatively with the life-stealing abilities of a Necromancer. The possibilities are endless.
A thrilling aspect of Subclassing is that progress and skills are maintained on an account-wide basis. This feature will excite “altaholics”who can finally concentrate their efforts into crafting an exceptionally versatile character, elevating the overall gaming experience.
During a recent press preview, I had the opportunity to inquire about potential limitations regarding Subclassing. Rich Lambert from the ESO team clarified key details:
“So, you can have all the [Skill] Lines learned, but you can’t have abilities from all the lines. The way it’s broken down is you have to keep one of your Class Lines, so class is still important and there’s some identity there. But then you can have two active Skill Lines from other classes. You can only choose abilities from those active Skill Lines, but you can progress all of the other ones. There’s also some costs associated with this. So Skill Points are doubled for some Class Lines, so you really have to invest into it. I don’t think that will be a problem for our super-invested players, because they’ve got more Skill Points than they know what to do with.”
He further emphasized that the skills will maintain their original power levels, ensuring that players won’t be at a disadvantage when utilizing skills from various classes. The anticipation surrounding Subclassing in Elder Scrolls Online is palpable, and fans are eager to see how this innovative feature unfolds.
This addition will be integrated into the base game of Elder Scrolls Online, meaning players won’t need to purchase any expansions or DLCs to access it, except when using classes tied to previous expansions. More information regarding this highly anticipated system is expected to be revealed in the near future.
