Nightdive Studios Aims to Remaster Classic PS3 and Xbox 360 Games

Overview of Nightdive Studios’ Remastering Initiative

  • Nightdive Studios invites gamers to suggest their favorite Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles for potential remastering.
  • The studio has successfully remastered several classics, including Turok 3 and Star Wars: Dark Forces.
  • Top fan favorites for remastering include titles such as the Riddick series, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, The Darkness, and Yakuza: Dead Souls.

Nightdive Studios is on a mission to gauge community interest in remastering iconic games from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 eras. Renowned for their expertise in revitalizing classic games, Nightdive has launched an impressive lineup of eight remasters between 2023 and 2024. Key titles in their recent catalog include remakes of Turok 3, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and The Thing, initially released in 2002. The studio has also worked alongside Bethesda and id Software to bring back fan favorites such as Quake 2 and the iconic Doom titles. Notably, they are preparing for the upcoming release of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster set for June this year.

For many gamers, the acknowledgment of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as “retro”consoles may come as a surprise, especially for those whose gaming journeys began during that generation. Adding to this, fans of the Xbox 360 were left disappointed when Microsoft closed its digital marketplace last summer, leaving many classic titles unavailable on the Xbox One or Series X/S platforms. However, 2023 marked a sort of resurgence in remasters from the seventh generation of consoles, with Capcom launching a deluxe version of Dead Rising and Grasshopper Manufacture offering refreshed takes on Lollipop Chainsaw and Shadows of the Damned.

Nightdive Studios Seeks Fan Input for Remaster Projects

Given Nightdive’s expertise in remastering first and third-person shooters, titles like The Darkness present a compelling option for revitalization. The Riddick games, held in high esteem by fans of the original Xbox and 360, would also likely prove successful if revitalized. When it comes to the JRPGs Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, these entries may seem a challenge for Nightdive’s typical scope, but since both properties are owned by Microsoft, collaboration could be straightforward, especially considering their previous successful partnerships on remasters of Quake and Doom. As for Yakuza: Dead Souls, the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, which is actively producing Like a Dragon titles, may prefer to handle a remaster in-house.
