On April 6, 2025, a significant milestone in South Korea’s healthcare and charitable landscape was achieved. Philanthropist Sean collaborated with renowned actor Park Bo-gum during a vlog that celebrated the grand opening of the nation’s first nursing hospital dedicated to Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). Accompanying them were Sean’s wife, Jung Hye-young, actress Lee Si-woo, Lim Se-mi, Jin Sun-kyu, and his running team, all gathered to honor this momentous occasion.
This nursing hospital materialized from Sean’s relentless 14-year commitment, which he channeled through the Seungil Hope Foundation. His passion for establishing a specialized care center for ALS patients was ignited after crossing paths with Park Seung-il, a former basketball player diagnosed with ALS in 2002. In 2011, they jointly founded the organization to address the pressing needs of ALS patients in Korea.
Realizing a Dream: The Opening of South Korea’s First Nursing Hospital for ALS Patients
The newly inaugurated hospital is a tribute to Park Seung-il’s lifelong advocacy for ALS patients, a commitment tragically cut short by his passing on February 25, 2025, just before witnessing the fruits of his labor. Throughout his life, he campaigned tirelessly for better awareness and care for ALS, galvanizing support from various sectors, including notable South Korean celebrities who voiced their backing during the ceremony.
Sean has been instrumental in various fundraising activities, most notably introducing the Ice Bucket Challenge to South Korea in 2014. This campaign gained tremendous momentum online, raising significant funds while also elevating public awareness about ALS.
Numerous public figures—including Park Bo-gum, IU, Kwon Nara, and Im Si-wan—rallied to support the cause, significantly contributing to the success of this hospital initiative. Additionally, members from the globally renowned group BTS, such as Jeon Jungkook and Kim Taehyung, joined the ranks of gracious donors. A special wall inside the hospital commemorates all contributors who helped make the dreams of Sean and Park Seung-il a reality.
Through his persistent efforts, Sean successfully raised approximately 5.7 billion KRW (around $3.91 million) earmarked for the facility’s establishment. The hospital has been meticulously designed to address the unique challenges faced by ALS patients, incorporating thoughtful design and specialized medical features.
Park Bo-gum, a dedicated supporter and volunteer for the ALS charity, actively participated in the event, having previously collaborated with Sean in the Miracle 365 Relay Run in 2019 to raise funds for the hospital. Notably, he also joined the revival of the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2023, reinforcing his commitment to the ALS cause and the foundation’s overarching mission.
Located in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, the newly opened Lou Gehrig’s Disease Nursing Hospital is equipped to offer comprehensive care specifically tailored to the needs of ALS patients. The facility boasts spacious rooms flooded with natural light and treatment areas that are easily accessible. Thoughtfully designed, it features barrier-free doorways and expansive gardens meant to welcome bedridden patients.
The inauguration of South Korea’s first ALS nursing hospital stands as a powerful testament to the difference that collective philanthropy can make. Sean’s ability to unify support from both the public and celebrity sectors sets a remarkable precedent for future charitable endeavors across the nation.
This facility now provides ongoing specialized care and support to ALS patients and their families, filling a crucial gap in services previously unavailable in Korea. The Seungil Hope Foundation remains dedicated to promoting ALS awareness and research, striving to enhance the quality of life for patients nationwide.
