Elizabeth Chambers Addresses Toxic Relationships in New Docuseries
Elizabeth Chambers, renowned as the former spouse of actor Armie Hammer, is exploring the intricate dynamics of harmful relationships through her latest project. In the newly released trailer for the docuseries titled Toxic, set to debut on Investigation Discovery and Max on May 5, Chambers takes viewers on a journey into the darker aspects of romantic partnerships.
“When it comes to toxic relationships, no one is immune,”
Chambers, a former host on Current TV, comments during the teaser. The six-part series showcases her journey as she revisits her own heartbreak, utilizing her background as an investigative journalist to delve into these complex themes. “Navigating through my own heartbreak took me back to my roots as an investigative journalist,”she reflects.

Throughout the series, Chambers engages with survivors of detrimental relationships, shedding light on the lingering trauma left by these experiences. Following her tumultuous split from Hammer in July 2020, after a decade of marriage, she became aware of alarming allegations against him through media reports, facing an avalanche of revelations simultaneously. “I was learning things as the public was… I was like, ‘There are no words. What the f***?'”she recounted.
The distress stirred by these public allegations was further articulated in a 2021 Instagram post where Chambers shared her emotional struggles: “For weeks, I’ve been trying to process everything that has transpired. I am shocked, heartbroken, and devastated. Heartbreak aside, I am listening and will continue to listen and educate myself on these delicate matters. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know.”
Unpacking the Mystery of Dysfunctional Relationships
With her investigative aptitude, Chambers aims to reveal the intricacies of dysfunctional relationships, focusing on the violence, manipulation, and deceit they often entail. “What I want to do is dive deeply into the intentions, dive deeply into the patterns,”she elaborates in the trailer for Toxic.
The premiere episode features an interview with Kelly Sutliff, who recounts her fairytale romance with her ex-husband that ultimately devolved into a nightmare. Subsequent episodes delve into harrowing stories, including:
- A woman who faced imprisonment after being wrongfully accused by her ex-fiancé, a U.S. Marshal.
- A family’s quest for justice after the tragic death of a young woman during a routine dental procedure.
- An investigation into the case of a military spouse caught in an abusive relationship that ended in violence.
In the series’ later episodes, Chambers investigates Anthony Strangis, a convicted conman, unveiling additional victims and understanding the trauma they endured. This project emerges from ID’s annual No Excuse For Abuse campaign, dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence and unhealthy relationship dynamics.
“At ID, we are deeply committed to raising awareness and fostering dialogue around unhealthy relationship dynamics,”
stated Jason Sarlanis, President of Investigation Discovery. “With Toxic, we aim to empower the voices of survivors and continue impactful conversations, ensuring that our No Excuse for Abuse initiative remains a year-round focus at ID, not just in October. We’re incredibly grateful for Elizabeth’s partnership on this series: her passion, empathy, and care have provided a safe space for survivors to speak out and share their stories.”
Related Initiatives in Combatting Domestic Violence
In conjunction with Toxic, ID’s No Excuse for Abuse campaign complements another docuseries, Chris Brown: A History of Violence, which featured a post-screening discussion led by Sunny Hostin with experts and advocates focused on intimate partner violence.
Meanwhile, following several years of serious allegations that damaged his career, Armie Hammer is cautiously re-entering the film sphere. The star of acclaimed films such as Call Me by Your Name and The Social Network is currently involved in low-budget indie productions, including Frontier Crucible and Bone Tomahawk.
