Overview of Upcoming Avengers Film: Doomsday
- Marvel Studios is exercising greater caution regarding details about future Avengers films, largely due to past leaks by actors Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo.
- The cast for Avengers: Doomsday is impressive, featuring Robert Downey Jr. in the role of the menacing Doctor Doom, along with iconic actors Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.
- Simu Liu has expressed his astonishment at being cast alongside Hollywood legends Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in this highly anticipated Avengers installment.
The buzz around Avengers: Doomsday has intensified following the release of its “In Production”announcement trailer, which unveiled its principal cast. Despite the excitement, Marvel appears to be more secretive about upcoming projects, attributing this shift in their communication strategy to leaks caused by actors in the past.
In the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has faced considerable challenges, particularly with its Multiverse Saga failing to resonate with audiences as strongly as hoped. After experiencing underwhelming performances in Phases 4 and 5, Marvel needs to deliver a blockbuster hit with Doomsday. The studio is sparing no resource; they have persuaded Robert Downey Jr. to reprise his role, but this time as an evil alternate universe version of Doctor Doom. Additionally, Kevin Feige has successfully recruited the renowned Russo brothers, directors of Infinity War and Endgame, which adds another layer of excitement for this project. Recently, it was announced that many beloved members of the former Fox X-Men cast will return for the Avengers crossover slated for 2026.
Simu Liu, who starred in the successful Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is also set to return for Doomsday. On The Jennifer Hudson Show, Liu shared his astonishment over the news that veteran actors McKellen and Stewart would join him in this blockbuster:
“I saw when Sir Ian and Sir Patrick were announced. These are two of the greatest actors to have ever walked the face of the Earth. That blew my mind a little bit.”
Liu’s comments refer to the esteemed Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart, who famously portrayed Magneto and Professor Xavier in the original X-Men film series. Their involvement in Doomsday has taken many by surprise, considering both are in their eighties. The legacy of their characters dates back to historic moments in the superhero genre, beginning with the groundbreaking X-Men (2000) film, which helped launch the superhero movie craze that dominates cinema today.
Liu expressed his disbelief at the prospect of working alongside such talented actors, stating, “These are two of the greatest actors to have ever walked the face of the Earth. That blew my mind a little bit.” His surprise also highlights Marvel’s tighter control over information, especially given that Liu was not informed about McKellen and Stewart’s roles until recently. He humorously pointed out the primary culprits behind Marvel’s increased secrecy:
“They don’t tell us anything. Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo ruined it for all of us. Now, they don’t tell us.”
Previous Spoilsports: Holland and Ruffalo

Liu’s remarks about Holland and Ruffalo are not without merit. Both actors have notoriously leaked significant plot details in the past. Notably, during the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War, Holland mistakenly revealed his character’s fate to an audience that hadn’t yet seen the film. His exuberant declaration, “I’m alive!,”unfortunately spoiled a pivotal moment in the movie.
Similarly, Ruffalo’s history with film leaks is memorable. He unintentionally streamed the premiere of Thor: Ragnarok, exposing audiences to the first ten minutes of the film’s audio. The most infamous slip came when he jokingly stated that “everybody dies” in Infinity War well before its theatrical release, thus spoiling one of the film’s most significant twists.
With such a large and notable cast for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel is understandably prioritizing confidentiality to avoid repeating past mistakes. Given the stakes involved in reviving the franchise’s momentum, the studio is keen on maintaining excitement without the risk of damaging leaks tarnishing its image.
