Exciting News: The Last of Us Renewed for Season Three
Fans of The Last of Us can rejoice as HBO announces the renewal of its critically acclaimed series for a third season, even before the premiere of its much-anticipated second season this weekend. Following an impressive run of reviews that places season two at a robust 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, the excitement surrounding the show continues to build.
Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner, expressed his enthusiasm: “We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us with season three.”
Neil Druckmann, the other co-creator, added: “To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me. I am immensely grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic support, much of which can be credited to my partner Craig Mazin, our collaboration with HBO, and everyone at PlayStation Productions. On behalf of Naughty Dog, our cast, and crew, thank you for this incredible opportunity; we’re eager to share more of The Last of Us.”
Francesca Orsi, head of HBO Drama Series and Films, highlighted HBO’s pride in the show: “It can’t be overstated how proud we are of the outstanding achievement that is the second season of The Last of Us. Craig, Neil, Carolyn, and the entire executive production team, cast, and crew have delivered a masterful follow-up. We’re excited to continue exploring the exceptional storytelling crafted by Craig and Neil in what we anticipate will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season.”
Mazin shared his thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter, drawing comparisons between the second season and the iconic second chapter of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back. He remarked, “I think about that a lot — because I love The Empire Strikes Back. It’s revered for a reason; the second act is often the toughest. Characters face pivotal challenges during this phase, experiencing a sense of feeling lost while struggling to evolve.”
