Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed director behind films like Fruitvale Station and Black Panther, is enthusiastically praising Michael B. Jordan for his remarkable dual role in their latest collaboration, Sinners. This supernatural horror film marks the fifth time the duo has worked together, following a series of successes that have captivated audiences and critics alike.
Jordan, in his latest endeavor, takes on the challenging roles of twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both World War I veterans embarking on a new venture in a blues club set in the heart of Mississippi during the 1930s. As Coogler prepares for the film’s release on April 18, he expresses high hopes for Jordan’s performance, noting that the role was crafted specifically for him to fully utilize his ambitious nature.
In an insightful interview with Deadline, Coogler acknowledged the complexities of Jordan’s role, stating that while he expected a stellar performance, the execution proved to be immensely challenging. Coogler remarked, “Sinners includes the two best performances I’ve ever seen from Jordan.”
It wasn’t hard, bro, to convince him. Mike’s very ambitious and you actually have a better chance to get him to say yes if the thing requires more of him. And I know that about him. I wanted to write a role for him that was worth his time and energy, where the execution of it was incredibly difficult. And honestly, I have more confidence in Mike and his abilities than anybody. And I did not expect him to be as good as he was in this. Just flat out, I think these two performances are the two best performances I’ve ever seen him give. And knowing who he is, Mike personally is very close to who the Stack character is, but seeing him become Smoke, as somebody who’s a friend of his, was very unnerving.
What This Means For Sinners
A New Level of Challenge for Michael B. Jordan

The recently released trailer for Sinners provides a glimpse of Jordan’s chilling transformation into Smoke, showcasing his remarkable ability to portray two distinct characters. Known for his intense performances, including the formidable Erik Killmonger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jordan’s portrayal of Smoke and Vampire Smoke diverges greatly from anything audiences have witnessed thus far.
Joining Jordan in this star-studded cast are notable talents such as Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jack O’Connell. Drawing inspiration from Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot and the folklore surrounding blues legend Robert Johnson, this film is particularly meaningful for Coogler, as it symbolizes his personal homage to his late uncle’s ardent love for blues music.
