This article contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of 1923. In a recent revelation, Brandon Sklenar, who portrays Spencer, elaborates on a pivotal moment in the season 2 finale where his character confronts Whitfield, insisting that he utter Alex’s name. The narrative picks up after the dramatic events of the season 1 finale, chronicling Spencer’s urgent mission to rescue his family from Whitfield’s unscrupulous scheme. Concurrently, Alex is on her own quest, searching for Spencer in Montana. Following various obstacles, the couple briefly reunites at the train tracks before they’re torn apart once more, as Spencer rushes back to defend his ranch from impending threats.
During an interview with IndieWire, Sklenar shared his insights regarding Spencer’s intense final interaction with Whitfield. Here’s what he had to say:
He’s fighting for any sense of vindication he can get, and he knows that he’ll never fully achieve it. He feels that Whitfield must recognize the gravity of his actions—what he has taken from Spencer and the pain he has caused—before Spencer avenges his family. While Whitfield may not bear the burden of guilt, acknowledgment of his transgressions is crucial for Spencer. However, this situation is tragic; deep down, he understands it’s a futile exercise that won’t ultimately mend anything.
Initially, the dialogue was much more extensive. I had a significant monologue about the reasons for my demand for Whitfield to say her name, but in the end, it was deemed unnecessary. The edited version allows for a more powerful impact; it clearly conveys my motivations without excessive explanation.
