FFXIV Composer Expresses Desire for More Representation of Classic Final Fantasy Game in the MMO

Final Fantasy XIV has a well-established tradition of integrating elements from its predecessor titles, creatively adapting them to fit within the expansive universe of Etheirys. These adaptations extend beyond mere repurposing; the game often features crossover events where iconic characters from various Final Fantasy installments arrive in Etheirys seeking assistance from the Warrior of Light. A notable example of this was the appearance of Clive during the crossover event with Final Fantasy XVI. Given this trend, it is reasonable to anticipate continued representations of past titles within FFXIV.

The recent launch of Patch 7.2 brings players closer to the conclusion of the extended narrative arc of Dawntrail, paving the way for subsequent patches that will set the stage for the next significant expansion. While previous expansions drew inspiration from titles like Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IX, there’s ample opportunity for another installment in the series to incorporate elements from Final Fantasy VIII.

FFXIV Composer Soken Believes the MMO Needs More FF8

In a recent interview with PCGamesn, composer Masayoshi Soken expressed a desire for greater representation of Final Fantasy VIII in FFXIV. As an ardent admirer of both franchises, I resonate with his viewpoint. While references to FF8 are present—such as a boss in the Crystal Tower named “Eyes on Me,”a nod to the iconic song from the game, and the introduction of gunblades—these acknowledgments pale in comparison to the numerous nods to other titles, particularly Final Fantasy IX, which currently plays a significant role in the main quests.

Soken’s talent shines through the music he creates for FFXIV, often inspired by classic franchises, as demonstrated by the recent reimagining of “Roses of May” into a battle theme. Although expectations for multiple tracks from FF8 may be unrealistic, the inclusion of one or two would be a delightful addition. Moreover, the generally overlooked status of FF8 within discussions about the series makes a return in FFXIV a fitting tribute.

Final Fantasy VIII Could Enrich FFXIV

The Quest for a New Villain

NoneNoneNone

The timing is ripe for the integration of FF8 into FFXIV, especially given the need for a new long-term villain in the overarching storyline. With Zodiark, the Ascians, and the Final Days resolved during Endwalker and no substantial villain introduced in Dawntrail, there’s a void to fill. While some side content hints at the potential for Ultima as the next antagonist, introducing Ultimecia, FF8’s primary villain, could be a more compelling choice.

For those unfamiliar, Ultimecia is unique as the first female main antagonist in the series—a powerful sorceress from the future who travels back in time to enact her ambitions of becoming a deity. Her narrative encapsulates classic tragic themes, as her attempts to prevent her own demise lead to the very events she seeks to avert.

Ultimecia’s time-traveling abilities and her quest for godhood would seamlessly blend into FFXIV’s fabric, providing a fresh villainous dynamic. This inclusion could set the stage for new content, echoing prior instances of time travel in FFXIV contributing to overarching stories. Furthermore, Ultimecia’s arrival could signify transformative changes in the game world, similar to the cataclysmic events surrounding Dalamud, rejuvenating the narrative landscape over the next decade.

As an antagonist, Ultimecia would present a genuine challenge against the celebrated power of the Warrior of Light, posing threats through her capacity to possess other sorceresses—a plot hook ripe for exploration.

Avoiding Forced Inclusion of FF8

Avoiding Forced Content

While crossover events, such as the placement of FF characters in Fall Guys, can be entertaining, FF8 deserves richer integration than merely a nod. This could help solve significant narrative challenges, such as establishing a primary villain to drive the plot across multiple expansions. Introducing content without a clear rationale risks feeling forced and can disrupt the natural flow of the storyline.

Fortunately, the current narrative phase of FFXIV offers viable pathways to incorporate FF8 in a meaningful way. A time-traveling antagonist like Ultimecia would provide inherent justifications for this emphasis, seamlessly linking to ongoing themes. While the direction of the upcoming content remains uncertain, should a decision be made to infuse FF8 elements, ensuring they serve a narrative purpose is paramount.

My affection for FF8 fuels my enthusiasm for its potential inclusion in FFXIV, especially with Ultimecia as a worthwhile villain. Yet, it remains unclear whether the story will venture in this direction in the next expansion. Nevertheless, I hold onto hope that Soken sees his dream come to fruition, allowing players to experience FF8-inspired musical masterpieces within the realms of Final Fantasy XIV.
