Switch 2 Available at Half Price for Gamers in One Country

Overview of Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 is priced at $450 internationally, with a significantly lower cost of $340 in Japan.
  • This lower-priced version in Japan is limited; it lacks multiple language options and necessitates a Japanese account for use.
  • Notably, even with the reduced price in Japan, the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour game is still not complimentary.

Nintendo’s unveiling of the Switch 2 in early January 2025 generated immense excitement among gaming enthusiasts. After a captivating first-look trailer, fans anticipated further details about the long-awaited successor to the original Switch. On April 2, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event drew millions of viewers eager to learn about new features, games, and pricing.

During the presentation, the audience awaited the announcement of the Switch 2’s price as new titles like Mario Kart World and updates to classics such as Super Mario Party Jamboree and Breath of the Wild were showcased. The price revelation only came after the event concluded, unveiling a cost of $450 for the console, exclusive of any games or accessories. Fans were left surprised by this high price.

Despite the lower price of ¥49,980 (approximately $340) available exclusively in Japan, this version comes with restrictions. It retains the same hardware and specifications, but offers no option for language changes and mandates that users have a Japanese account for online access. Consequently, gamers outside Japan who wish to enjoy regional features will require the standard model, which incurs an additional cost of about ¥20,000, making it around $430.

Critics argue the reduced price is perplexing given these limitations and that it suggests Nintendo’s pricing model may not have a strong justification. Adding to the controversy, players were disappointed to learn that Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour will retail for over $6, rather than being offered as a complimentary incentive. This is surprising especially when compared to Nintendo’s past practices of bundling free games, like Wii Sports, with console releases.

Considering the reception of the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, it appears challenging for the game to achieve a strong sales performance, as many fans have expressed discontent with the decision to charge for a title that resembles a basic tech demonstration for the console.
