During CinemaCon, Chris Pratt unveiled footage from his upcoming film Mercy, which has drawn intriguing parallels to the classic sci-fi film featuring Tom Cruise. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, this original narrative presents a futuristic detective story. It was one of several films from Amazon MGM showcased at the event, which also included updates on franchises like 007, Masters of the Universe, and The Thomas Crown Affair. Unlike these established reboots, Mercy offers a fresh storyline centered on a detective who finds himself wrongfully accused of killing his wife in a technologically advanced society.
The film’s central element, the Mercy program, introduces an intriguing concept where a suspect’s reasonable doubt is quantified by a percentage. In the trailer presented at CinemaCon, it becomes evident that Pratt’s character must demonstrate his innocence by proving that his guilt is less than 92% probable, all within a tight timeframe of just 90 minutes. While it remains uncertain whether Mercy will become one of Pratt’s standout performances, the film’s success may be overshadowed by its striking resemblance to a notable 2002 sci-fi feature.
Similarities Between Mercy and Minority Report
Almost Identical Premises

In terms of thematic resonance, there’s a pronounced overlap between Mercy and Minority Report, one of Steven Spielberg‘s celebrated works from the early 2000s. The narrative follows John Anderton (played by Cruise), the head of the Precrime unit, who is tasked with apprehending criminals before they execute their crimes. However, when the program’s predictive technology falsely implicates him in a future murder, he races against time to establish his innocence before it unfolds.
Despite these striking similarities, notable differences exist. Pratt’s character is suggested to have had a role in founding the Mercy program. In contrast, Anderton’s involvement stemmed from personal loss. Additionally, Pratt reportedly spends much of the film’s runtime in a chair, while Minority Report features dynamic action across various expansive settings. Nevertheless, even if Mercy offers a superior plot twist in its conclusion, it faces significant challenges in matching Minority Report‘s legacy.
Challenges Facing Mercy in the Shadow of Minority Report
A Benchmark of Tom Cruise’s Career

Recreating the impactful reception of Minority Report will be a formidable task for Mercy. This iconic film, which significantly diverged from the original Philip K. Dick novella, became a commercial success, earning over $358 million against a $102 million production budget. This financial achievement positions it among Colin Farrell’s highest-grossing films, surpassed only by franchises with established fanbases, such as The Batman and Fantastic Beasts.
Critically, Minority Report was well-received, boasting an impressive 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film not only resonated with audiences but also intriguingly predicted future trends, such as personalized advertisements. While some may criticize Tom Cruise for his typecast roles, concerns about Chris Pratt being perceived similarly could hinder Mercy from achieving top-tier status among critics. Without addressing these perceptions, it might be challenging for Mercy to surpass the legacy established by Minority Report.
