Ranking Every Live-Action Disney Princess from Worst to Best

Over the years, Disney has embarked on an ambitious adventure, transforming its cherished animated classics into live-action films. To date, seven iconic Disney princesses have graced the silver screen, but their adaptations have received mixed receptions, prompting discussions about their rankings. Although Disney’s journey into live-action commenced in the 1990s, the trend surged in popularity with the release of Cinderella in 2015. Since then, Disney has taken on the task of reimagining its animated treasures, from Beauty and the Beast to the most recent adaptation of Snow White, each varying significantly in success.

The primary challenge—and sometimes an advantage—of Disney’s live-action adaptations lies in balancing fidelity to the source material with the incorporation of fresh narratives. While certain adaptations strive to stay true to the animated originals, others take creative liberties. Each film faces intense scrutiny concerning its fidelity, drawing comparisons to the originals, and often resulting in either commercial triumphs or notable flops.

7 Mulan

A Shift in Character

Considered the least compelling of the live-action princess adaptations is Mulan. Originally portrayed in 1998, the animated film introduced audiences to a brave Chinese woman who disguises herself as a man to take her ailing father’s place in the army. While the 2020 live-action version retained this essential storyline, it notably omitted beloved characters and musical elements, such as Mushu and Shang.

Despite a commendable performance by Yifei Liu as Mulan, the character’s transition into a more rigid, soldier-like persona detracted from the charm and wit that made her endearing in the original film. This portrayal seemingly undermined one of Mulan’s core messages—that vulnerability and authenticity can coexist with strength.

6 Aurora/Briar Rose

A Compelling Supporting Role

Next in line is Auror/Briar Rose, made prominent in 2014’s Maleficent. This film reinterprets the 1959 classic, showcasing the narrative from the perspective of the antagonist. It explores the tumultuous history between Maleficent and Briar Rose’s family, leading to a curse on the girl that evolves into a bond between them. Although Elle Fanning’s portrayal of Briar Rose is charming, her character lacks depth in this narrative, overshadowed by Maleficent’s compelling antihero storyline.

Future adaptations focusing more directly on Briar Rose, perhaps by creating a standalone Sleeping Beauty film, could potentially grant her character the spotlight she deserves.

5 Snow White

A Modern Take

Snow White ranks as a recent addition, with the 2025 live-action adaptation aiming to bring a fresh narrative twist to the timeless tale. This iteration depicts Snow White as a resilient character fighting against the cruel Evil Queen who has usurped her parents. The film has sparked controversy over its themes and casting decisions, yet Snow White remains a captivating figure.

Despite the debate surrounding her casting, Rachel Zegler’s portrayal of Snow White is widely praised. She successfully embodies the character’s iconic traits while bestowing her with added depth and agency that resonate with modern audiences.

4 Jasmine

Empowered and Evolved

Jasmine with Aladdin

Naomi Scott’s portrayal of Jasmine in the 2019 live-action adaptation of Aladdin exemplifies an enhancement to her character. The film, which follows the familiar storyline of a street rat uncovering a genie and falling in love with Jasmine, also offers lucrative character development. Jasmine emerges as a more assertive figure, taking charge of her story while also sharing her romantic journey with Aladdin.

Emphasizing Jasmine’s strength, the film grants her a new song that showcases Scott’s impressive vocal talent, further solidifying her position as an empowering representation of a Disney princess.

3 Belle

A Performance to Remember

Belle dancing with the Beast

Among Disney’s adaptations, Belle stands out in 2017’s Beauty and the Beast. Emma Watson delivers a stunning interpretation of the book-loving heroine, maintaining the character’s essence while adding new layers. The film closely follows the animated original, depicting Belle’s journey to save her father and discover love within a cursed creature. Watson embodies Belle’s intelligence, kindness, and spirit effortlessly.

Although her singing may not perfectly mimic the original voice of Paige O’Hara, Watson’s performance adeptly channels Belle’s spirited nature, making her one of the most memorable live-action adaptations to date.

2 Ariel

A Modern Interpretation

Halle Bailey as Ariel

Another strong contender is Ariel, brought to life in 2023’s The Little Mermaid. Halle Bailey’s casting was initially met with contention, yet she delivered a breathtaking performance as the youngest daughter of King Triton, who yearns to explore the human world. The narrative showcases Ariel’s deal with Ursula and her charming romance with Prince Eric while adding complexity to their relationship.

Bailey’s portrayal captures the essence of Ariel’s emotions, especially in scenes where her dialogue becomes limited. This deeper exploration of Ariel’s character elevates her from mere whimsy to a well-rounded hero, securing her place as one of the standout live-action Disney princesses.

1 Cinderella

The Quintessential Disney Princess

Classic Cinderella

Leading the pack is Cinderella, whose 2015 live-action film effectively set the benchmark for future adaptations. Portrayed by Lily James, this version remains faithful to the beloved story of a young woman mistreated by her stepfamily, who ultimately finds hope through her fairy godmother and love at the prince’s ball.

James flawlessly embodies Cinderella’s charm and grace, returning the magic that can sometimes be lost in transitions to live-action. Her performance is a heartfelt homage to the original, making the film an exemplary adaptation that Disney should look towards as it develops future projects.
