Mike White Explains Hesitation to Cast BLACKPINK’s Lisa in The White Lotus 3: “She’s Like Taylor Swift Meets Princess Diana”

Behind the Scenes of The White Lotus Season 3: Mike White on Casting Lisa

In a recent discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Mike White, the mastermind behind The White Lotus Season 3, shared his initial reservations regarding the casting of BLACKPINK member Lisa. The interview, published on April 2, 2025, delves into the captivating stories behind the series’ creation, providing unique insights into the casting process.

White candidly revealed that his unfamiliarity with both Lisa and BLACKPINK made him hesitant about including her in the cast. Initially concerned about potential security issues associated with her celebrity status, his perspective changed dramatically after witnessing her audition. He found Lisa’s authenticity and grounded demeanor compelling.

Addressing Lisa’s immense popularity in Thailand—the show’s setting—White remarked:

“But I wanted to be respectful to Thailand. She’s like Taylor Swift meets Princess Diana there.”

He further elaborated on his early misconceptions about her, acknowledging:

“She’s more than just a pop star; I just didn’t get it initially. When we cast her, there were people in the production that cried.”

Lisa also shared her own experiences leading up to the audition, expressing her apprehension about the process. To prepare, she participated in acting classes and even brought her mother along for added support:

“Before I flew to Thailand, I did some acting lessons. I was so nervous. I brought my mom.”

The White Lotus Season 3, a satirical comedy-drama series airing on HBO, stars a diverse range of talent, including Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Michelle Monaghan, and, notably, Lisa, who portrays a unique character named Mook. Mook is depicted as a wellness guru at a luxurious beach resort in Thailand, where her character develops a romantic connection with Gaitok, a security guard played by Tayme Thapthimthong.

Lisa’s Role and Her Latest Album, Alter Ego

In an insightful interview with Variety in February 2025, Lisa described her character Mook as a more flirtatious and feminine version of herself, contrasting her own tomboyish personality. The season premiered on February 16, 2025, and concluded with its eighth episode on April 6, 2025.

Simultaneously, Lisa embarked on her solo music journey with the release of her debut studio album, Alter Ego, on February 28, 2025. After departing YG Entertainment in 2023, this album showcases her artistry under her own label, LLOUD, in partnership with RCA Records. Featuring a total of 15 tracks with high-profile collaborations from artists such as Doja Cat, Raye, Rosalía, Future, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tyla, the album articulates her versatility.

Each track corresponds to one of her five avatars—Roxi, Kiki, Vixi, Sunni, and Speedi—all of whom embody various characteristics, enriching the listening experience. Upon release, Alter Ego debuted at No. 7 on the US Billboard 200 chart, making her the second BLACKPINK member to achieve a top 10 placement as a solo artist. The album also secured No. 1 on the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart and achieved impressive standings on other charts, including No. 5 on Australia’s ARIA Album Chart.

In an exciting update for fans, Lisa is slated to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 11 and 18, 2025, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Her participation underscores her expanding influence in both the music and entertainment industries.
