Ann Dowd Joins ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Creators to Preview New Sequel Series ‘The Testaments’

Gilead Lives On: Hulu Announces The Testaments Series

As the iconic series The Handmaid’s Tale approaches its conclusion, Hulu is not ready to bid farewell to the dystopian world of Gilead. Recently, the streaming platform officially greenlit the sequel series, The Testaments, which will delve deeper into this compelling narrative.

Adapting Margaret Atwood’s Vision

The upcoming series is based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel, The Testaments, and promises to bring new dynamics to the screen. Ann Dowd will reprise her role as the formidable Aunt Lydia, while The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss steps into an executive producer role. The storyline shifts focus to June’s daughter, Hannah, who is known in Gilead as Agnes. More exciting details were unveiled during the premiere of the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale on Wednesday.

A Closer Look at the Plot

Creator Bruce Miller, who has been instrumental in the success of the original series, shared insights with The Hollywood Reporter. He explained that The Testaments takes place four years post-The Handmaid’s Tale, following Agnes MacKenzie as she navigates the complexities of life in Gilead. Miller noted, “The aim is to eventually bring down Gilead, which aligns with Agnes’s development throughout her journey.”

A Fresh Perspective in Familiar Territory

In his discussion, Miller emphasized a distinctive approach for The Testaments. “We aim to create a fresh narrative anchored by younger voices that bring a different atmosphere while still residing in the world of Gilead,” he mentioned. He expressed hope that the series will maintain the interest of existing fans while attracting new viewers.

Shifting Visuals and Themes

Executive producer Warren Littlefield contributed additional insights, highlighting the unique perspective of the new characters. “These young women have only ever known life in Gilead, lending a drastically different viewpoint to the story,” he stated. He also hinted at a transformed visual style for the show, describing it as “pastoral and beautiful,” featuring a different architectural landscape and color palette. Despite these changes, he assured that the essence of Gilead will still be palpable.

Cast and Production Details

Chase Infiniti, known for her role in Presumed Innocent, will portray Agnes, alongside Lucy Halliday as Daisy, another pivotal character. Production for The Testaments is set to commence on April 7. Reflecting on her transition from The Handmaid’s Tale, Dowd shared her emotional experience, stating, “While my last day on The Handmaid’s Tale was splendid, saying goodbye was a tearful affair. I am filled with gratitude and love for my colleagues, making this farewell bittersweet.” She expressed enthusiasm about her continued role within the Gilead universe, saying, “It’s both thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking, but I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the new cast.”

Final Season Release Date

The sixth and concluding season of The Handmaid’s Tale will debut with three episodes on April 8, followed by a weekly release leading up to its finale on May 27.
