Crafting and Using a Harness in Minecraft: A Complete Guide

Mojang has introduced an exciting new item in Minecraft: the harness, designed specifically for players to fly the newly added happy ghast mob. This feature was unveiled during the inaugural Minecraft Live event of 2025, showcasing the joy of airborne adventures within this blocky universe. Essentially functioning as a saddle, the harness is exclusively compatible with happy ghasts. Crafting this gear is a straightforward process, making it accessible to players eager to explore the skies.

Below is a comprehensive guide on how to craft and utilize the harness in your Minecraft journeys.

Creating a harness in Minecraft is quite simple. You will need:

  • 3 pieces of leather
  • 2 glass blocks
  • 1 wool block of any color

Leather can be collected by defeating cows or horses, while glass blocks are obtained by smelting sand in a furnace. Wool blocks can be harvested by shearing sheep or by defeating them. With all your materials ready, follow these steps to craft the harness:

  1. Place the three leather pieces in the top row of the crafting table.
  2. Put the glass blocks in the second row, positioned in the left and right slots, and place the wool block in the center of that row.

2) Equipping the Harness on a Happy Ghast

Once you’ve crafted the harness, the next step is to equip it on a happy ghast. It’s important to note that this item is exclusively designed for happy ghasts and cannot be used on other types of ghasts or flying mobs.

To obtain a happy ghast, you will initially need a dried ghast block, which can be nurtured underwater until it spawns a ghastling. Feed the ghastling snowballs to help it grow into a happy ghast.

If you’re finding it challenging to place the harness on the happy ghast, you can entice the mob closer by throwing snowballs. This tactic will draw the creature within reach, making it easier to harness your new flying companion.

After successfully placing the harness, press or tap the use button to start riding the happy ghast. With this, you’ll gain control over its movements and altitude, offering an exhilarating way to soar through the Minecraft world.
