Donna Langley Calls on Theater Owners to Provide Superior Experiences Compared to Home Viewing

The Rise of Donna Langley: From Universal Pictures to NBCUniversal Entertainment

Donna Langley’s ascent in Hollywood is a compelling story of leadership and innovation. Currently serving as the chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios, Langley previously headed Universal Pictures and has made considerable strides within the industry.

Captivating Presentation at CinemaCon

During the Wednesday afternoon session at CinemaCon, attendees found themselves immersed in a unique presentation unlike the usual industry speeches. Rather than typical acknowledgments, Langley and her team captivated theater owners with an orchestral showcase featuring iconic movie themes and scores, masterfully conducted by the renowned Rickey Minor. The 43-piece orchestra, flown in from Los Angeles, performed selections from celebrated Universal titles such as Jaws, Jurassic Park, Oppenheimer, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, and Wicked, creating an electrifying atmosphere.

Following the performance, Langley took the stage amid thunderous applause, expressing her gratitude for the orchestra’s work. “Wow! Let’s hear it again for Rickey Minor and his amazing orchestra,” she exclaimed, visibly moved by the event.

Leading Through Uncertainty

In a time of uncertainty for many major Hollywood studios, Langley emerged as a stabilizing presence. She remained firm on essential topics, notably the ongoing discussion surrounding theatrical windows. NBCUniversal has been at the forefront of reshaping these traditional windows, consistently pushing innovative boundaries.

“It’s great to be back here at CinemaCon,” Langley remarked. “Celebrating the power of movies and the promise of an unparalleled theatrical experience with this incredible community is always one of the highlights of my year.”She emphasized that these moments allow filmmakers to showcase their hard work born from years of development and significant marketing campaigns, designed to inspire audiences to visit theaters.

Adapting to Audience Evolution

Langley conveyed a clear message: “Our audiences are evolving, and we need to work harder than ever to earn a share of their time and wallets.” She highlighted Universal’s contributions to the cinematic landscape, which have led to impressive success in the box office arena.

Notably, Langley pointed out that Universal has provided the largest volume of wide releases in the post-pandemic market, achieving over $4.5 billion in global box office revenues alongside Disney. “Since 2021, Universal has garnered more top-five global box office hits than any other studio, and we’ve maintained the highest average ratings on Rotten Tomatoes,” she added, committing to deliver exceptional entertainment that compels audiences to purchase tickets.

The Call for Enhanced Theatrical Experiences

Despite Universal’s success, Langley underscored the pivotal role of theatrical exhibitors in creating an unmatched cinematic experience. “Walking into a movie theater and settling into your seat with anticipation is why we do what we do,”she emphasized. Acknowledging the ongoing challenges, she reiterated the importance of collaboration to elevate the industry experience.

A Commitment to Engagement

Unlike many of her peers who opted out of CinemaCon, Langley made the conscious choice to engage directly with exhibitors, kickstarting the presentation herself. Universal plans to release over 20 films this year, maintaining its position as the studio with the most diverse lineup.

In her capacity at NBCUniversal, Langley oversees entertainment programming across various platforms, including Peacock, Bravo, and NBC, in addition to guiding creative strategy and distribution for its award-winning film and television units.

A Bright Future Ahead

Concluding her remarks, Langley expressed enthusiasm for the future: “There is a lot to be excited about and proud of, and our upcoming slate is definitely no exception.”
