Michael Jackson Biopic Under Review: Filmmakers Consider Dividing Film into Two Parts

Michael Jackson Biopic’s Future: Exploring New Duology Plans

At last year’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate concluded its presentation with an exhilarating preview of the upcoming biopic, Michael. The footage captivated attendees, creating a concert-like ambiance at Caesars Palace Coliseum and garnering an enthusiastic response. Producer Graham King announced that this much-anticipated film would incorporate an impressive 30 songs and feature a lengthy runtime to authentically portray the life of the legendary pop icon.

Ambitious Plans for a Two-Part Feature

Recent developments suggest that King and his team are contemplating an ambitious direction for the project: extending Jackson’s narrative across two separate films. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, these discussions are still in their infancy.

This speculation comes on the heels of reports indicating production challenges. An earlier Puck article highlighted potential complications regarding the film’s third act, which reportedly included dramatizations involving an accuser of Jackson. This accuser had previously settled with the Jackson estate, ensuring they would not be portrayed in any dramatization. The estate appeared to overlook this agreement in its initial support of the project. By potentially bifurcating the movie, filmmakers may find an opportunity to address these sensitive issues more effectively.

Next Steps and Approval Requirements

It is rumored that King is actively advocating for this two-part concept. However, any transition from a single film to two will necessitate approval from various stakeholders, including the Jackson estate, Lionsgate (the domestic distributor), and Universal Pictures (responsible for international distribution). If this new plan gains traction, the film’s scheduled release date of October 3 will likely be adjusted to accommodate these modifications.

As of now, Lionsgate and King have not issued any comments regarding these developments.

Project Background and Current Status

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael features Jaafar Jackson, the late pop star’s nephew, in the titular role. The cast also includes Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo, with a script penned by John Logan. Producers include Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain. Notably, the film has already experienced a six-month delay, shifting its release from April 2025 to October 2025.

During this year’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate refrained from showcasing new footage, and no updated release date was mentioned. Motion Picture Group head Adam Fogelson addressed the audience, acknowledging the global interest in the project since the previous year’s preview:

“Ever since we debuted some early Michael footage at CinemaCon last year, it’s been crystal clear how much global interest and enthusiasm there is. Much has happened since, and while we aren’t quite ready to share more, we’re going to have some very big and exciting things to say in the coming weeks. So be patient, and stay tuned.”

As the biopic’s future unfolds, audiences remain eager for updates on this unique tribute to the King of Pop.
