Compatibility of Nintendo Switch 1 Games on Nintendo Switch 2: Most Work Smoothly, But Some Encounter Issues

The Nintendo Switch 2 has confirmed backwards compatibility with the original Switch, allowing players to enjoy a large selection from its vast library of over 15,000 titles. However, while most games will be playable on the new console, some compatibility challenges have emerged. Early testing indicates that select titles may experience issues that require further updates for optimal performance.

According to Nintendo, not every game from the first-generation Switch is compatible with the Switch 2. Notably, there is only one Nintendo-developed title that cannot be played on the new system: Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. This limitation arises due to the size of the Switch 2, which renders the Toy-Con VR Goggles accessory incompatible.

In addition to the first-party titles, several third-party games, including popular titles like Warframe, Fortnite, and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, are currently suffering from compatibility issues. Nintendo has indicated that they are actively investigating these problems.

Many third-party games face various compatibility issues with the Nintendo Switch 2. Users have reported problems ranging from startup failures to difficulties during gameplay. Currently, just over 20% of Nintendo Switch 1’s third-party titles are confirmed to be fully compatible and issue-free. For those games that are undergoing testing, it is possible they simply need further evaluation to establish their compatibility with the new hardware.

Moreover, several games are set to receive special Switch 2 versions, which adds another layer of complexity regarding how the original games will perform on the new system. For instance, Fortnite has been flagged for issues under compatibility, with Nintendo indicating a “Nintendo Switch 2 version is planned” to address these challenges.

With only one first-party title noted as incompatible, it’s clear that Nintendo is prioritizing first-party game support, enhancing the library available at the Switch 2’s launch. This strategy signals their dedication to ensuring that their flagship titles maintain compatibility while also gauging the performance of upcoming titles.

Given the strong third-party support anticipated for the Switch 2, Nintendo is likely to expedite the resolution of any compatibility issues, striving to make the Nintendo Switch 2 an appealing console not only for its exclusive offerings but also for third-party franchises dear to gamers’ hearts.
