Warning: Contains spoilers for Hellverine #5!
The world of the X-Men has taken a dark and thrilling turn with the introduction of their most sinister version yet. Recently, the team unveiled striking new costumes that reflect the malevolent supernatural forces within the Marvel Universe. In the latest chapter of Wolverine’s son’s saga as the Hellverine, readers are treated to a captivating vision of what an entire mutant team might resemble if they were under the sway of Ghost Rider.

Mephisto’s Dark Vision: Crafting an Infernal X-Men Team
Mephisto’s plans involve assembling a formidable collective of mutants, each reimagined with a heavy metal aesthetic. In his twisted scheme, if he can manipulate these mutants, he will utilize their extraordinary powers to establish dominion over humanity.

Although these reimagined, demonic iterations of the X-Men exist merely in Mephisto’s twisted future vision, they serve as a sobering reminder of the stakes that Akihiro, now the Hellverine, is determined to prevent. This malevolent X-Men lineup incorporates some of the franchise’s most iconic heroes, showcasing them in dark attire characterized by spikes, chains, and even devilish horns.
Historically, the X-Men have sported black leather outfits, particularly renowned from their film adaptations. However, in this eerie rendition, the ensemble might evoke a full-blown Ghost Rider homage if it included flaming skulls. As mutants are marked by Mephisto as potential minions, Akihiro has stepped into the role of a ghostly avenger. Throughout the events of Hellverine #5, he grapples with thwarting Mephisto’s ominous intentions for mutantkind and in turn masters the demon within himself to temporarily best the adversary.
A Trend Towards the Macabre: Are We Overdoing It with Satanic Heroes?
Increasing Trends of Hell-Inspired Heroics

As Akihiro manages to disrupt Mephisto’s fiendish operations, the revival of demonic characters across the Marvel Universe raises concerns. While the concept of a Hellish X-Men is intriguing, the abundance of infernal incarnations of beloved characters may be reaching saturation. For instance, the upcoming Daredevil: Unleash Hell story features the Woman Without Fear facing off against Helektra, while Hellverine #5 introduces the promising new Hell Hulk to Earth-616, promising a fresh twist on the classic Wolverine versus Hulk rivalry.
Though the Hell Hulk appears looming on the horizon, Mephisto’s ambitions for the X-Men remain thwarted thanks to Hellverine’s intervention and personal growth. Yet, in the ever-expanding Marvel multiverse, it’s conceivable that another dimension exists where Mephisto’s villainous vision could materialize, granting these mutant heroes their eerie outfits and unleashing chaos upon the world. The X-Men could easily become a formidable array of malevolent agents for Marvel’s devilish overlord, but for the time being, Hellverine guarantees that their dark makeover will stay confined to Mephisto’s imagination.
