House of the Dragon has officially entered production for its highly anticipated third season. Showrunner Ryan Condal recently shared exciting details about the upcoming episodes, generating considerable buzz among fans.
This fantasy drama series, which is a prequel to the acclaimed Game of Thrones, was created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. The first season debuted on August 21, 2022, and received a generally favorable reception, while the second season, releasing in the summer of 2024, garnered mixed criticial feedback. Nonetheless, Season 3 promises to elevate the narrative with the addition of new characters, including one highly favored by the fanbase.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Condal highlighted the arrival of two new actors for the third season. Among them is Dan Fogler, renowned for his role in Fantastic Beasts, who will portray Ser Torrhen Manderly, a knight from House Manderly. Additionally, Tommy Flanagan joins the cast as the beloved Ser Roderick Dustin, known as Roddy the Ruin, who leads the formidable Winter Wolves. In Martin’s literary work Fire & Blood, Ser Roderick is depicted as an aged warrior, with his nickname hinting at his storied past and battle-hardened reputation.
“I don’t want to say much because I think this is one of those truly memorable Game of Thrones characters, and I’m very excited to bring him into the fold.”— Ryan Condal
Condal expressed his delight in collaborating with Flanagan and anticipates an exceptional portrayal of Roddy the Ruin. While he remained tight-lipped about the specifics surrounding this iconic character and his band of Winter Wolves, he did indicate that crafting their storylines was a rewarding endeavor. Flanagan emphasized, “I would like to say we’ve brought some northern spirit into our southern base tale here.”
Roddy the Ruin is a character celebrated for his courage and combat skills, having led the Northern warriors, the Winter Wolves, in support of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s quest for the Iron Throne. His legacy includes significant contributions to key battles such as the Battle by the Lakeshore—where he achieved a crucial victory against the Lannisters—and the First Battle of Tumbleton, where he notably killed both Lord Ormund Hightower and his cousin, Ser Bryndon Hightower, before succumbing to his injuries.
The inclusion of Roddy and the Winter Wolves in House of the Dragon Season 3 marks a pivotal shift, as the North’s influence during the Dance of the Dragons was noticeably underrepresented in the previous season. Fans of the series will remember the fierce Northern warriors like Ned Stark (played by Sean Bean) and Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington), but Roddy brings a new dimension—a chaotic and daring approach that stands apart from traditional portrayals. His intense clashes with the Hightowers are amongst the most gripping sequences in Fire & Blood, featuring a raw, Viking-like energy that is bound to resonate with fans who appreciate epic battle narratives.
Mark your calendars: House of the Dragon Season 3 is slated to premiere on HBO and Max in 2026, promising to deliver thrilling content for enthusiasts of the franchise.
