Sony’s Tom Rothman Makes a Comeback at CinemaCon with Support from The Beatles

Tom Rothman Shines at CinemaCon 2025 with Major Beatles Announcement

Tom Rothman, the chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, made a notable appearance at CinemaCon 2025, supported by industry colleagues. During this prestigious gathering of theater owners, Rothman unveiled the studio’s exciting upcoming projects, highlighting a monumental endeavor: a series of four films directed by Sam Mendes centered on The Beatles. These films are set to release sequentially in April 2028.

A Revolutionary Cinematic Experience

“We are not just making one film about the Beatles; we’re making four,” Mendes declared, eliciting a wave of applause as he joined Rothman onstage at the Colosseum Theater within Caesar’s Palace. Rothman’s witty banter followed, playfully questioning Mendes on his reasoning for such a large-scale project.

Mendes responded with enthusiasm, stating this will be the “first bingeable theatrical experience.” He emphasized the necessity for grand cinematic events to draw viewers back into theaters. Rothman added a layer of jest, probing Mendes about the viewing order of the films, to which Mendes coyly responded, “That’s for further down the road.”

Commitment to the Future of Theatrical Releases

In this ambitious project, fans can expect a rich narrative focusing on each member of the Fab Four: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. According to Rothman, this Beatles undertaking may well eclipse even his previous landmark achievements, including his tenure with “Avatar”while at 20th Century Fox.

Despite the current tumultuous landscape of Hollywood, marked by potential leadership shake-ups across studios, Rothman appears to retain Sony’s support. Sources indicate that although an official contract extension is yet to be announced, Rothman’s leadership is valued moving forward, with Sony Pictures Entertainment chair-CEO Ravi Ajuha present in the audience to show solidarity.

Rising Costs and Changing Perceptions

During his presentation, Rothman cautioned about the impact of escalating ticket prices and shortened theatrical windows on the industry. He pointed out, “There’s a magic word, and that word is Tuesday,” referencing how reduced prices on Tuesdays significantly boost attendance. This trend underscores the necessity for theaters to adapt pricing strategies to enhance customer engagement.

Furthermore, Rothman underscored the critical nature of exclusive theatrical windows, especially as the market evolves with home viewing options becoming available shortly after theatrical releases. Sony distribution chief Adam Bergerman shared insights from recent surveys revealing that one-third of Americans believe they can access films at home within a month of their release. “This undermines the incentive to visit a theater,”he noted, highlighting a need for a shift in public perception.

Prioritizing a Diverse Film Slate

A staunch supporter of the cinematic experience, Rothman reiterated Sony’s commitment to offering a diverse portfolio of films that range from major blockbusters to innovative original content. His forthcoming lineup will include contributions from both celebrated directors like Danny Boyle and Darren Aronofsky and emerging filmmakers, showcasing a blend of talent.

Welcoming Vibes and Moving Tributes

After skipping last year’s CinemaCon, Sony’s return was met with enthusiasm. Rothman received a warm reception from cinema operators, who celebrated his presence enthusiastically. The atmosphere electrified when Mendes and Rothman concluded their segment by introducing the cast for the Beatles films: Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, each bringing their unique portrayal to the intertwining stories of the iconic band.

This year’s CinemaCon, now under the banner of Cinema United (formerly known as the National Association of Theatre Owners), welcomed thousands of cinema operators from around the globe. Managing director Mitch Neuhauser took a moment to honor the memory of Jon Landau, James Cameron’s longtime producing partner, who passed away last year. He remarked, “Jon, we miss you. Your work will live forever on the big screen,” while a tribute is anticipated during Disney’s Avatar presentation later in the week.
