Danny Boyle Unveils ’28 Years Later’ Trailer While Announcing Ongoing Financing Needs to Finalize Trilogy

Reviving the Undead: Excitement at CinemaCon for 28 Years Later

The highly anticipated undead action film 28 Years Later generated considerable buzz at this year’s CinemaCon, held in Las Vegas. Director Danny Boyle showcased the latest trailer during the event, capturing the audience’s attention with his signature storytelling style.

Danny Boyle’s Enduring Love for an Apocalypse

During his presentation, Boyle humorously remarked on his growth as a director since the release of 28 Days Later in 2002. “I still love an apocalypse, British-style,” he quipped, expressing continued enthusiasm for the series’ themes. He playfully acknowledged the anticipation surrounding the return of Cillian Murphy, the original film’s star, teasing that his appearance will require some patience from fans: “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.”

Nia DaCosta Takes the Helm

Joining Boyle on stage was Nia DaCosta, director of the forthcoming installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. DaCosta emphasized that while the sequel draws inspiration from its predecessor, it boasts a unique script: “I was able to let my freak flag fly,” she revealed, hinting at creative liberties that set her film apart.

The Future of the Franchise

Amid the excitement, Boyle shared that financing for the anticipated third film in the franchise is still in the works. He encouraged fans to support 28 Years Later and its sequel to help secure the trilogy’s future. The new film features an impressive cast, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, with Boyle directing from a script crafted by Alex Garland, the writer of the original film.

A Promising Project with Big Players

Recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter indicated that this project has been in development for some time, with Garland scripting a complete trilogy under the Sony Pictures banner. Notably, Cillian Murphy is not only reprising his role but also taking on the role of executive producer after winning an Oscar in 2024 for his performance in Oppenheimer. Alongside Boyle and Garland, producers include Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew.

Looking Ahead to The Bone Temple

DaCosta, fresh off her directorial success with The Marvels, is enthusiastic about her role in shaping the live-action horror landscape with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. This sequel is slated for a theatrical release on January 16, 2026. Boyle has expressed his commitment to directing the trilogy’s third installment, contingent upon the success of the first two films.

A Legacy of Horror

The original 28 Days Later revolved around Murphy’s character, who wakes from a coma to a world devastated by a viral outbreak that turned society into the undead. The film garnered over $80 million globally and spawned a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, released in 2007, although Boyle and Garland’s roles were limited to executive producing.
