The inaugural celebration in 2014 featured a playful teaser from Google Maps about a mode called Pokémon Challenge. Fast forward two years, and Pokémon GO transformed this humorous concept into a reality, allowing players worldwide to catch Pokémon in their backyards. Since then, Niantic has marked this occasion every year with engaging in-game activities. For example, the 2018 event revived nostalgia with an 8-bit graphical update, reminiscent of the franchise’s early days. In 2024, players enjoyed enhanced gameplay as any throw better than “nice” was automatically categorized as “excellent,” improving catch rates for wild Pokémon.
