Niantic has revealed exciting plans for the upcoming April Fools’ Day event in Pokémon GO, scheduled for April 1, 2025. Following a long-standing tradition of hosting a unique event lasting just 24 hours, this year introduces a novel in-game experience aimed at assisting trainers in their Pokedex completion efforts.
Since its inception, Pokémon GO has embraced April Fools’ Day festivities, a trend that began even before the game’s official launch in 2016. The inaugural celebration in 2014 featured a playful teaser from Google Maps about a mode called Pokémon Challenge. Fast forward two years, and Pokémon GO transformed this humorous concept into a reality, allowing players worldwide to catch Pokémon in their backyards. Since then, Niantic has marked this occasion every year with engaging in-game activities. For example, the 2018 event revived nostalgia with an 8-bit graphical update, reminiscent of the franchise’s early days. In 2024, players enjoyed enhanced gameplay as any throw better than “nice” was automatically categorized as “excellent,” improving catch rates for wild Pokémon.
Detailed Overview of the 2025 April Fools’ Day Event
For April Fools’ 2025, players can expect a fresh encounter experience. The event will showcase special Poké Balls dotted across the map, leading trainers to random encounters with familiar faces. When interacting with these Poké Balls, trainers have a chance to catch Pokémon such as Voltorb and Electrode in their standard or Hisuian forms, as well as Foongus, Amoonguss, and the Galarian form of Stunfisk, which sports a nose reminiscent of a Poké Ball. Notably, some fortunate trainers might even snag shiny versions of these Pokémon. The event also offers the opportunity to complete the Pokedex and provides free Poké Balls during the encounters. This delightful April Fools’ Day event will run for 24 hours, from 00:00 to 23:59 local time.
