The intense journey through the conflict for the Watergate City of Priestella has reached an exhilarating conclusion in Re:Zero Season 3, Episode 16. This episode serves not just as a finale for the battle but also wraps up the narrative arc of the Witch Cult’s invasion, setting the stage for future developments.

While the finale may have felt somewhat underwhelming due to its lack of a decisive victory or defeat, it was nonetheless engaging. The animation quality and pacing in this episode met expectations, providing a satisfying conclusion to a long-fought struggle.

The Conclusion to the Fight Against Gluttony

The Emergence of a Third Sin Archbishop

Beatrice saving Otto from Lye

With Capella’s retreat, the remaining battles feature the two Sin Archbishops of Gluttony: Lye Batenkaitos and Roy Alphard. This episode picks up with Beatrice, now back on her feet, joining Otto in his fight against Lye. Despite having an incredibly powerful spirit on their side, the confrontation proves challenging as Lye matches Beatrice’s spellcasting while continuing to devour members of Felt’s mercenary group.

Rui Arneb's first appearance

Fortunately, Felt returns with a metia that possesses the potential to harm an adversary as formidable as Reinhard. Although Felt is unsure how to wield it, Beatrice recognizes it from her past and expertly releases a beam that knocks Lye down. However, just as they appear to gain the upper hand, a mysterious girl emerges, abducting Lye and injuring Otto. Introducing herself as Rui Arneb—a sister to Lye and Roy—she becomes the third Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. With Beatrice depleted of her magic crystals, they are forced to retreat.

The Aftermath

Positive Outcomes

The day after the Battle of Priestella

Following Rui’s retrieval of her brother, Subaru’s team reconvenes in the ruins of the Priestella City Hall. They share experiences of the night’s events and strategize their next moves.

Overall, Subaru’s team emerges from the battle with significant achievements. They thwarted the Witch Cult’s plans to resurrect a deceased Witch and obtain the Book of Wisdom. Additionally, they successfully defeated Regulus, the Sin Archbishop of Greed, and detained Sirius, the Sin Archbishop of Wrath. While initial interrogations of Sirius have yielded little useful information, Reinhard remains optimistic about extracting valuable insights about the Witch Cult in the future. Importantly, the team minimized fatalities, although some losses were critical.

Despite securing a victory, the aftermath reveals troubling casualties. Capella has left a trail of victims transformed into minuscule creatures throughout the city. Without an immediate cure available, Emilia must resort to freezing them to preserve their existence until a solution is found. Furthermore, the toxic effects of Capella’s Dragon Blood still run rampant within Crusch, leaving her bedridden.

The victims of Gluttony also bring challenges, as Lye and Roy have devoured numerous individuals’ names and memories. Many of their victims remain in a state of confusion, forgotten, or in comas based on what was taken. An intriguing narrative point emerges when Subaru discovers Julius standing in a decrepit building, leading to the shocking realization that Roy has consumed Julius Juukulius’s name, leaving his identity obscured from others.

“Subaru, you… know who I am?” – A confused and frightened Julius

This cliffhanger raises questions about the future and may cause fans to dread another lengthy wait for the next installment, akin to the gap between seasons 2 and 3. Fortunately, it’s been announced that Re:Zero season 4 is in production, with signs pointing to a possible late 2025 or early 2026 release.

Currently, Re:Zero Season 3 is available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Muse Asia, MeWatch, and various streaming platforms. Stay tuned for updates on the release of season 4!
