Comparing Rand’s Relationship with Lanfear in the Wheel of Time Series

Warning: Spoilers for The Wheel of Time Season 3, Episode 5

The latest installment of The Wheel of Time has rewritten the narrative surrounding Rand al’Thor and Lanfear, taking viewers aback. In Season 3, Episode 5, Rand’s kiss with Lanfear shocked many, particularly Egwene al’Vere, as it signifies a rekindled relationship that seemed to be concluded. Despite Lanfear’s moments of assistance, her identity as one of the eight Forsaken and a notorious channeler complicates Rand’s feelings and choices.

Rand’s decision to embrace Lanfear is surprising, not only because he is aware of her true nature, but also due to his ongoing bond with Egwene. This shift is particularly intriguing when compared to their interactions in Robert Jordan’s original Wheel of Time novels, where the complexities of their relationship differ significantly from the show’s portrayal.

Rand’s Lack of Romantic Feelings for Lanfear in the Books

The Absence of Romantic Interest Post-Book Two

In the literary version, Rand’s affections for Lanfear were never genuine. Although the series may hint at such an emotional connection—especially as Rand struggles against her temptations— the romantic undertone is not as pronounced in the books. Unlike the show, which alludes to a deeper emotional conflict, Rand’s interactions with Lanfear remained devoid of romantic intent after the second book, The Great Hunt.

Initially, while under her alias Selene, Lanfear does capture Rand’s interest due to her beauty and allure. However, once her true identity as one of the Forsaken emerged, any romantic tension dissipated. By this time, Rand’s romantic life was already entangled with characters like Min Farshaw, Aviendha, and Elayne Trakand, further complicating any potential relationship with Lanfear.

Lanfear’s Complex Relationship with Rand in the Books

Unrequited Love: A Central Theme

The theme of unrequited love dominates Lanfear’s character arc throughout the novels. In the show, her jealousy towards Egwene reflects her torment towards the women in Rand’s life, mirroring the cruelty of her character in the books. However, the end of Episode 5 indicates that Lanfear in the series achieves something her book counterpart never did: a semblance of closeness to Rand.

Lanfear’s backstory—rooted in her previous relationship with Lews Therin Telamon—enriches her character. In the Age of Legends, her rejection by him parallels Rand’s treatment of her, intensifying her obsessive behavior. Unlike the novels, where she permanently remains an outsider, the show has amplified her aspirations, allowing her a moment of triumph when Rand and Egwene’s dynamic is disrupted.

The Futility of Rand and Lanfear’s Connection

Impending Conflict: Rand’s Ignorance of Lanfear’s True Nature

Despite the show’s exploration of their relationship, the current connection between Rand and Lanfear seems unsustainable. For the series to stay true to the essence of Rand’s character from the books, a rejection of Lanfear appears inevitable. The relationship is underpinned by deceit, and Rand’s understanding of Lanfear is steeped in misinformation.

While he perceives their connection as personal—bolstered by memories revealed in Rhuidean’s glass columns—Rand is oblivious to the emotional damage Lanfear inflicts upon Egwene or her sinister nature. Recognizing this, it becomes clear that Rand must sever ties with Lanfear, echoing the actions of his literary counterpart.

A confrontation with Egwene looms on the horizon, promising to unearth the complexities of Lanfear’s manipulation. This revelation is likely to serve as a catalyst for Rand’s character development, sharply contrasting the innocence of his literary journey.
