“Nothing could make these feet happier than to speak at the University of Maryland. I just know the class of 2025 is going to leap into the world and make it a better place, so if a few encouraging words from a frog can help, then I’ll be there!”
The announcement highlighted Kermit’s remarkable journey, noting his evolution from humble beginnings to becoming a global cultural icon. He has consistently inspired audiences with his messages of optimism and self-belief:
“An international superstar and best-selling author who—in many ways—got his start right here on our campus. From humble beginnings, he has gone on to become one of the world’s most beloved and enduring cultural icons—all while sharing a message of optimism and believing in yourself.”

The Origins and Legacy of Kermit the Frog
Kermit the Frog was originally brought to life by the visionary puppeteer Jim Henson in 1955, debuting on the local television program Sam and Friends. His popularity skyrocketed after appearing on Sesame Street, which began in 1969, and later on The Muppets Show from 1976 to 1981. Jim Henson himself voiced Kermit until his untimely passing in 1990.
Interestingly, Jim Henson was an alumnus of the University of Maryland and created Kermit while still a student there. To honor his legacy, a bronze statue of Henson with Kermit stands proudly at the university’s student union.
The Evolution of Kermit’s Voice

From his inception in 1955 until Henson’s death, Kermit was exclusively voiced by Henson. This character quickly became a mainstay in popular culture, appearing across various television shows, video games, and even internet memes. On Sesame Street, Kermit served as a news anchor, delivering a serious yet humorous perspective amidst comedic chaos alongside characters like Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and Miss Piggy.
After Jim Henson’s passing, Steve Whitmire took over the portrayal of Kermit, continuing the character’s legacy through numerous films, including the acclaimed The Muppet Movie series. In 2017, the role transitioned to Matt Vogel, who currently brings Kermit to life.
Kermit’s History of Commencement Addresses
This upcoming address at the University of Maryland is not Kermit’s first experience with commencement ceremonies. Previous to this event, Kermit delivered a speech to the 1996 graduating class at Southampton College, where he humorously reflected on the gravity of the occasion:
“I am sure that when you were children growing up back in your own particular swamps or suburbs, you never imagined you would sit here on one of the most important days of your life listening to a short, green talking frog deliver your commencement address.”
He continued with words of encouragement, saying:
“All of us should feel very proud of ourselves… and just a little bit silly. In any case, congratulations to all of you graduates. As we say in the wetlands, ‘Ribbit-ribbit-kneedeep-ribbit,’ which means ‘May success and a smile always be yours… even when you’re knee deep in the sticky muck of life.'”
Kermit, affectionately known as “the world’s most famous amphibian,”has also addressed the 1996 winter commencement at the University of Maryland and shared his insights at Harvard University back in 1982. Decades after Jim Henson’s departure, Kermit the Frog endures as a beloved character in children’s entertainment and remains an iconic figure in global pop culture.
