NCIS: Origins Episode 14 Overlooks Consequences of Its Best Plotline, Which is Disappointing

The relationship between Tish and Franks in NCIS: Origins has yet to receive a conclusive update following their rocky breakup in episode 13. Many viewers share my disappointment, as their romance has emerged as one of the most captivating subplots in the series. Episode 13, titled “Monsoon,”adeptly delved into their backstory, making it all the more surprising that episode 14 offered no new information about their status.

Each character in NCIS: Origins boasts a distinctive and intricate backstory that adds depth to the series. Despite the engaging narratives of other characters, Franks consistently stands out due to his rich characterization. His relationship with Tish further enhances his appeal, leaving fans puzzled as to why the events of episode 14 failed to address their tumultuous fallout from the previous installment.

In episode 14, titled “To Have And To Hold,”the fallout from Tish and Franks’ relationship is obscured but nonetheless suggested. The initial indication of their awkward dynamic arises during a conversation between Franks and Wheeler regarding Tish, with Franks’ evasive response raising eyebrows. A more pivotal moment occurs when Franks confides in Mary Jo about residing in a motel, confirming that his relationship with Tish is indeed fragile.

While “To Have And To Hold”implies some tension between Tish and Franks, their current relationship status remains murky. The show skirts around this sensitive topic instead of explicitly addressing it. While Franks’ move signifies a potential breakup, the ambiguity leaves viewers wondering about Tish’s feelings and whether she will ultimately forgive Franks. One can only hope their time apart could provide the necessary space for reconciliation.

Why NCIS: Origins Must Revisit Tish & Franks’ Separation

Tish & Franks’ Story Is Far From Over

The episode “Monsoon”was so emotionally charged that it would be a missed opportunity if NCIS: Origins failed to develop this storyline further. The bond between Tish and Franks is palpable, underscored by Franks’ choice to investigate Tish’s attack, even against her wishes. This dilemma showcases the complexity of their relationship: both parties are valid in their motivations, adding to the poignant nature of their separation. Franks seeks to protect Tish, while she desires him to uphold his promises.

Moreover, Tish and Franks undeniably represent the most profound couple in NCIS: Origins. Their connection demonstrates the understanding and depth characteristic of long-term relationships, placing them ahead of the other leading couple, Lala and Gibbs, whose dynamic falls flat by comparison. Their story deserves to continue, as it has brought considerable warmth and light to the show. If their romance were to conclude, it should do so on-screen, allowing for a thorough exploration of their experiences before moving forward.

While the NCIS franchise’s timeline suggests Tish and Franks should part ways by the time the flagship series begins in the early 2000s, there remains a significant gap of at least ten years between NCIS: Origins and the premiere of NCIS. This gap allows for Tish and Franks to explore their relationship further in season 1 without an immediate breakup. Given the mutual affection and respect they hold for each other, there exists the potential for them to continue their love story, even if an eventual breakup looms.

As NCIS: Origins continues to air Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS, viewers hold out hope that Tish and Franks will receive the narrative closure they deserve. Despite the inevitability of tragedy in their arc, it would be a disservice to their characters and their captivating love story to let it end prematurely. The serendipitous encounter that led to their relationship in “Monsoon”should be further explored, as there remains ample time to develop their narrative between NCIS: Origins and the flagship series.
