Citadel Faces Uncertainty as Amazon MGM Delays Season Two
The high-profile spy series Citadel, produced by Joe and Anthony Russo’s AGBO and backed by Amazon MGM, has encountered new challenges as its journey progresses. Once touted as a flagship show with aspirations for global reach, Citadel has consistently grappled with soaring budgets and creative hurdles, yet it initially secured a second season order that is now in jeopardy.
Release Date Pushed Back
According to multiple sources reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM has shifted the anticipated release of Citadel’s second season from fall 2025 to spring 2026. Furthermore, plans for all associated spinoff series are currently on hold until the show’s second season is finalized, if not indefinitely paused.
Concerns Over Season Two
Insiders indicate that dissatisfaction with the current progress of the second season is fueling this delay. While Amazon has refrained from commenting, speculation surrounds the precise timing of the show’s return. AGBO also declined to make a statement regarding the matter.
International Spinoffs in Limbo
Initially envisioned as part of a broader narrative strategy, Citadel was set to include several international spinoffs, including Citadel: Diana in Italy and Citadel: Honey Bunny in India, both of which have garnered positive views in their respective markets. However, the development of these projects is now stalled as efforts focus on refining the flagship series.
Production Challenges and Budget Issues
From the outset, Citadel has been beset by complications, including extensive reshoots and competing cuts during its first season, which inflated its budget by an additional $75 million, culminating in a staggering total of $235 million. This budget made it the second most expensive television series ever, behind only Amazon’s own The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Despite these challenges, the series was renewed for a second season even before its premiere in April 2023.
Leadership Shake-Up Raises Concerns
With the recent setback, there are growing concerns among insiders about the future of Citadel. The series was originally envisioned by former Amazon MGM head Jennifer Salke, who approached the Russo Brothers with the concept as they were concluding their tenure in the Marvel Universe, intending for it to rival iconic franchises like James Bond. Recently, Amazon has assumed more creative control, further complicating the show’s trajectory.
Compounding the show’s difficulties is the unexpected departure of Salke, which surprised many within the company. As Vernon Sanders takes the helm as the new head of TV, the absence of a strong executive advocate may pose additional challenges for Citadel moving forward.
As the situation unfolds, industry watchers will be keenly observing the decisions made by Amazon MGM, as the fate of Citadel hangs delicately in the balance.
