Spoiler alert: This article discusses pivotal plot points from 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 12, titled “Disconnected.”
Intriguing Developments in Buck and Eddie’s Relationship
As the second half of 9-1-1 Season 8 unfolds, viewers are captivated by the evolving dynamics between Buck and Eddie. Episode 12 highlights that while there are hints of potential romance, Buck and Eddie’s bond has significant hurdles to overcome. These characters have been best friends since Eddie’s debut in Season 2, developing an inseparable connection throughout their journey in the ABC procedural. However, recent events in Eddie’s storyline have drawn them apart, prompting Buck to reassess his feelings for his longtime friend.
ABC airs new episodes of 9-1-1 every Thursday at 8 PM ET, followed by Doctor Odyssey at 9 PM ET and Grey’s Anatomy at 10 PM ET. Season 8 is expected to conclude with a total of 18 episodes.
A dedicated fanbase has long hoped that the show’s writers would lean into the undeniable chemistry between Buck and Eddie, steering their relationship toward romantic interest. While Season 8 introduces some promising developments in that direction, it remains evident that the journey towards a romantic relationship is just beginning. Fans eagerly anticipate how future seasons, perhaps a ninth installment, will tackle the “Buddie”narrative. For the moment, however, Eddie’s focus is directed away from romance.
Eddie is Committed to Rebuilding His Relationship with Christopher
Eddie’s Current Priorities Do Not Include Romance

The narrative took a significant turn at the conclusion of Episode 10, when Eddie relocates to El Paso, Texas, aiming to be closer to his son, Christopher, who has been staying with Eddie’s parents following the tumultuous events of Season 7. Realizing he was losing touch with Christopher, Eddie made the decision to change his surroundings for the sake of family connection. Yet, as Episode 12 reveals, simply relocating doesn’t automatically mend their strained relationship.
Adjusting to life in El Paso has proven to be challenging for Eddie. His new home is a work in progress, and securing employment hasn’t gone as smoothly as anticipated. Although he comes close to landing a job at a local firehouse in Episode 12, a hiring freeze thwarts his efforts. Consequently, Eddie opts to sell his truck, purchase a fuel-efficient sedan, and work as an Uber driver to financially support Christopher. At this juncture, it is clear that considering a romantic relationship is far from Eddie’s mind.
Buck’s Counsel Extends Eddie’s Texas Journey and Their Romantic Prospects
Eddie’s Future in Los Angeles Remains Uncertain

After receiving disappointing news about his job application in Episode 12, Eddie turns to Buck for support. Struggling with feelings of defeat, he contemplates returning to Los Angeles. Although Buck longs for his best friend’s presence back in LA, he encourages Eddie to remain in Texas, emphasizing his duty as Christopher’s father over his aspirations as a firefighter or an Uber driver. With his friend’s encouragement and Christopher’s desire for him to stay, Eddie appears unlikely to return to the 118 anytime soon.
9-1-1 Appropriately Emphasizes Eddie’s Role as a Father
Eddie Prioritizes Rebuilding His Relationship with Christopher

In the unfolding narrative of Season 8, it is both logical and fitting for 9-1-1 to center its storyline on the mending of Eddie’s relationship with his son, Christopher, rather than on a burgeoning romance with Buck. Eddie has consistently prioritized fatherhood above all else—his responsibilities to Christopher come first, overshadowing any emerging “Buddie”romantic possibilities. It is likely that Buck will continue to navigate his own feelings in LA, but as actor Ryan Guzman stated in an interview with TVLine, that inner conflict is Buck’s hurdle to overcome, not Eddie’s. During Season 8, Eddie’s primary focus will remain on fostering a healthy relationship with Christopher in Texas.
