Tyler, The Creator Critiques Rappers Who “Copy” Authentic Hip-Hop Artists for Quick Success

Tyler, The Creator Critiques Copycat Rappers in Recent Interview

In a recent discussion with Nardwuar the Human Serviette, Tyler, The Creator expressed strong feelings about the current state of hip hop. Aired on March 27, 2025, the interview highlighted Tyler’s passion for the genre while pointing out the troubling trend of artists who prioritize profit over authenticity.

Celebrating Hip Hop’s Legacy

Nardwuar, known for his unique interviews, presented Tyler with a memorabilia poster signed by Cindy Campbell, recognized as the First Lady of hip hop. This moment was particularly significant, as Cindy’s brother, DJ Kool Herc, is often credited with founding hip hop in New York City back in 1973. Additionally, Nardwuar commemorated the 50th anniversary of hip hop by gifting Tyler collectible buttons, which were met with enthusiasm.

Tyler’s Deep Affection for Hip Hop

During their conversation, Tyler emphasized his admiration for hip hop, asserting that his critiques come from a place of profound respect. He described the genre as the “most beautiful thing,”condemning those who “copy”it without recognizing the hard work that went into creating authentic music.

“Some of these folks, man, they look at this like a quick money-getting thing. They look at it as a commodity. They look at it, just to criticize,”he remarked.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating

Tyler conveyed his happiness about being part of the special occasion— the 50th anniversary of hip hop. He passionately stated,

“Hip hop has changed so many of our lives (and) kept so many of us out of trouble. I’ve said this before (and) I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I’m so grateful for it.”

The True Essence of Hip Hop

Admitting to previous criticisms of the genre, Tyler clarified that his comments originated from a place of love. He sees himself as a devoted learner and aficionado of hip hop.

“I’m a true student. I’m a true nerd.”

The Challenge of Authenticity

He expressed concern that many aspiring artists attempt to replicate the authenticity of hip hop, yet often end up “mimicking and mocking”it due to a lack of true connection. “They don’t believe it here,” he pointed to his heart, emphasizing the importance of genuine passion.

“Some of these folks they be like, ‘I fell in love with hip hop this day, or like this…’ I don’t know what that is ’cause (hip hop’s) been around me my whole life. I am rap. I am hip hop. That’s all I know,”he shared with Nardwuar.

Recent Remarks on the Industry and Artist Integrity

This scrutiny of the hip-hop landscape is not new for Tyler. In a previous appearance on the Spring Hill podcast, he discussed how the internet culture often skims over genuine talent, leading to situations where less qualified individuals are celebrated as musicians solely for their viral success.

“There’s so many n***as out right now who aren’t musicians, that are getting treated like musicians cause they make meme records,”Tyler stated.

He elaborated that many modern artists focus primarily on monetary gain, thus undermining the artistry that true musicians strive to maintain. Consequently, this shift endangers the opportunities for genuine artists like Tyler, The Creator.

Moreover, he recently criticized fans for asking invasive and personal questions during encounters, asserting the need for boundaries.
