Nancy Wilson Reflects on American Identity and Political Climate
Nancy Wilson, the renowned guitarist and vocalist of the rock band Heart, recently opened up about her feelings regarding American identity in today’s contentious political landscape. In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wilson reflected on the ongoing turmoil during the Trump administration and how it resonates with the issues addressed in several of Heart’s iconic songs from the 1970s.
Music Reflecting Social Issues
Wilson cited their 1975 hit “Crazy on You,”originally penned as a critique of the Vietnam War, stating that its message has become increasingly relevant. “We felt a certain level of embarrassment in identifying as Americans due to the corrupt politics surrounding the Vietnam War. To phrase it delicately, the feelings of embarrassment are even stronger now,” she remarked.
Additionally, Wilson pointed to the band’s 1977 anthem “Barracuda,”suggesting that the song’s themes resonate deeply within today’s culture of greed and misogyny. She highlighted how the notorious “grab-them-by-the-(expletive)”mentality exemplified by President Trump’s remarks from 2005 has nurtured a troubling environment for women. This sentiment ties directly to the lyrics of “Barracuda,”making its relevance endure amidst today’s challenges.
Art as a Medium for Change
“These songs will outlast us,” she stated with conviction, emphasizing the lasting impact of music in addressing societal issues. When the conversation shifted to the ongoing sexism depicted in “Barracuda,”Wilson expressed her optimism for the future. “I believe there will be a resurgence, a renaissance in the arts, pushing back against the suppression perpetuated by a select group of affluent individuals. I sincerely hope to witness that next movement,” she expressed passionately.
A Public Stance Against Trump
Both Nancy and Ann Wilson have been vocal critics of Donald Trump’s presidency. In a previous interview with The Hill, the sisters made it clear that they believe “anybody but Trump” should utilize “Barracuda”for their campaign promotional material during the 2020 presidential election. Ann Wilson further expressed her strong disapproval of voting for Trump.
