Set against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse, Young-joo’s character showcases loyalty and perseverance, especially in her relationship with Jae-yoon, played by Park Jung-min. Highlighting the completion of the series, Jisoo noted in a recent statement,
“I think many actors and staff members came together to create a precious piece, and I’m honored to be a part of it. I think there were many opportunities to think about the precious things I had forgotten while living as Young-joo, so I am grateful to Young-joo and will continue to cheer her on.”
Through her agency, Blissoo, Jisoo conveyed her appreciation for being part of this project, complimenting the hard work and dedication of the entire cast and crew that brought the series to life.
Exploring Young-joo’s Character Arc in Newtopia
Jisoo has mentioned that portraying Young-joo allowed her to reflect on the values she often overlooks. She expressed a desire for the audience to continue supporting both her character and their own aspirations. Her performance resonated with viewers, skillfully balancing thrilling action scenes with heartfelt moments.
The storyline of Newtopia follows Jae-yoon, a soldier stationed at an air defense unit in a high-rise building in Seoul, and Young-joo, as they battle to stay together during a terrifying zombie outbreak. Jae-yoon’s journey includes dealing with personal anxieties about his future and the relationship struggles that arise from his insecurities. Their breakup lays the groundwork for Jae-yoon’s significant transformation as he steps up to take on a leading role when chaos ensues.
In contrast, Young-joo is a character who initially faces hurdles in adapting to society while navigating her relationship with Jae-yoon. However, her quest to find him amid the apocalypse enables her to evolve and become stronger, showcasing resilience in the face of danger.
Young-joo undergoes significant development throughout the series, revealing survival instincts, bravery, and unexpected charm. As the plot progresses, Jisoo’s character confronts various antagonists, which brings forth both fear and vulnerability, enriching her character’s emotional depth. By the season finale, after enduring harrowing events, Young-joo ultimately reunites with Jae-yoon, reflecting substantial personal growth.
Despite the relentless zombie threat, Young-joo’s journey culminates in a powerful declaration of love and resilience, leaving the audience with a sense of hope and determination.
