Drake Bell Speaks Out on Childhood Trauma and Abusive Work Environment
Drake Bell, known for his role in the beloved Nickelodeon series Drake and Josh, recently opened up about his experiences working alongside Brian Peck, a former dialogue coach who was later convicted of sexually assaulting Bell in 2004. During a poignant reunion with co-star Josh Peck on the Good Guys podcast, hosted by Josh and entrepreneur Ben Soffer, Bell reflected on the contrasting emotions he felt on set.
A Jarring Experience on Set
“Where I felt most comfortable, where I was the happiest was when I was on set with you guys,” Bell shared with Josh. “But the worst part was every day I got there, the monster was there, you know?” His recollections highlight the dark side of working in a seemingly idyllic environment, revealing the pervasive toxicity that can lurk beneath the surface.
Bell’s revelations coincide with recent discussions surrounding toxic work environments in the entertainment industry. He has emerged as a prominent voice among former child actors bringing attention to this serious issue, particularly in relation to programs helmed by influential figure Dan Schneider. In March 2024, Investigation Discovery launched a docuseries titled Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which exposes disturbing allegations including abuse and inappropriate conduct involving minors on Nickelodeon productions.
Hollywood’s Harsh Reality
During the podcast, both Bell and Peck discussed the harsh realities faced by child stars growing up in the spotlight. Josh offered a glimpse into his own struggles, stating, “I remember people would ask me about the show or something. And I would say, ‘Well, I lost 100 pounds and had to get sober at 21. Did I seem happy?'” These sentiments reflect a broader pattern of challenges that young actors endure in an industry often fraught with pressure and exploitation.

The Complex Aftermath of Abuse
The podcast highlighted the impact of Brian Peck’s arrest on both men. Josh recalled the moment he learned about Peck’s incarceration, expressing relief at the news. “I got a text from someone who worked on the show saying, ‘Brian’s arrested. He’s going to jail.’ And through my simple teenager mind, I just thought, ‘Oh, thank God,'” he stated. However, Josh admitted that he didn’t fully grasp the depth of Bell’s trauma until watching the docuseries. “It’s only in watching the doc that I can realize that just him being put to justice…what about you? What about the trauma you endured? It’s so much deeper,” Josh remarked.
The docuseries’ third episode featured Bell recounting graphic details of his experience with grooming and alleged sexual abuse by Peck. In 2003, Peck faced accusations of molesting a child and was later convicted of multiple offenses, resulting in a 16-month prison sentence. Bell vividly remembered the courtroom experience filled with Peck’s supporters, saying, “It was hard… when we went to court, the entire side of his courtroom was full of people who I thought were my friends.”
Industry Complicity and Support for Abusers
Josh expressed outrage at the support Peck received from various individuals in the industry, citing 41 character witness letters submitted on Peck’s behalf. “It’s fucking bonkers, insane,” he said, highlighting the disturbing reality of how abusers can be defended in moments of reckoning.
The conversation continues as the second part of this revealing interview between Drake Bell and Josh Peck is set to air, providing more insights into their experiences. Additionally, the podcast coincides with the release of Bell’s latest album Non Stop Flight, a 35-track collection that offers a semi-autobiographical look into his life.
