Recall Alert: SeaBear Smokehouse Soup Products – Reasons, Affected Locations, and Details

SeaBear Smokehouse has announced a voluntary safety recall affecting two of its well-loved seafood chowders: Smoked Salmon Chowder and Alehouse Clam Chowder. This action, taken on March 15, 2025, was prompted by concerns regarding potential contamination by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can lead to severe illness. The affected products were distributed nationwide between October 2024 and mid-March 2025.

The recall impacts items sold in grocery stores across five states and shipped directly to customers via the company’s website. Although there have been no reported illnesses connected to these products, SeaBear Smokehouse is advising consumers to either return or dispose of the chowders without delay. Refunds can be issued through the company’s customer service.

Understanding the Reason Behind the Recall

This recall is rooted in a packaging defect that compromises the integrity of the 12-ounce pouches. Such a flaw can create an environment conducive to the growth of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium notorious for producing toxins that can result in botulism, a potentially fatal condition.

The recall was initiated following a consumer report of leaking pouches. Subsequent investigations uncovered issues with the sealing equipment. Even though the products are designed to remain stable on shelves, improperly sealed containers can allow harmful bacteria to thrive, making it unsafe to taste or cook the affected chowders. It’s important to note that typical heating methods may not adequately eliminate the toxin.

Both products were sold in dark blue 12-ounce pouches at grocery stores located in Alaska, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. They were also offered for nationwide delivery through the SeaBear Smokehouse website.
