Insights from Harry van Vliet on Below Deck Down Under Season 3
The premiere of Below Deck Down Under Season 3 on February 3 reintroduced fans to familiar faces, including the charismatic Deckhand Harry van Vliet. Harry’s journey this season began with an exhilarating moment—a kiss with Stew Brianna Duffield—which hinted at the blossoming of a new relationship.
However, their chemistry faced a hurdle when Harry sustained a thumb injury, leading him to adopt a more laid-back attitude towards their budding connection. This change in demeanor was surprising to many, including Harry himself, who later expressed his feelings in an interview with US Weekly on March 17.
“I’m like, ‘Oh really? Come on, that’s not what I meant,'” he noted. “I thought I was all good. I had everything under control with Bri. I thought we were both on the same page but now watching it back, it looks like I’m not doing the right thing.” he said.
Reflection on Relationships and Regrets
In his US Weekly interview, Harry candidly reflected on his relationship with Brianna, expressing regret over his actions following their kiss. Upon viewing their interactions unfold onscreen, he realized he had failed to communicate his feelings clearly. This issue was compounded by his struggle to balance his work responsibilities with personal connections, especially after his injury.
Despite understanding the need to concentrate on his work to make a good impression, Harry acknowledged that he should have given more attention to his relationship with Bri.
“We are on a busy charter so there’s a lot [going on]. Obviously I’ve got a sore thumb. I’m trying to stay employed because if I slack off, [Captain] Jason [Chambers] is probably going to fire me. So there’s a lot of things going on. But that’s probably one of the things I should have prioritized a bit more.”
Personal Growth and Future Aspirations
As the season progressed, Harry made it clear that he was entering Season 3 with greater experience and maturity. He obtained a Yachtmaster certificate during the off-season and was eager to demonstrate his capabilities to Captain Jason Chambers, aiming for the roles of bosun and lead deckhand.
While Harry set new professional goals, he remained open to romantic developments aboard the yacht, albeit with caution this time around. Reflecting on past experiences, he didn’t want to release his emotions too freely as he had in Season 2.
Discussing his connection with Bri, Harry remarked on their shared “energy and vibes,”likening it to “Labrador energy,”which fostered an immediate attraction. He expressed optimism about their rapport, hinting that they were genuinely resonating with one another.
“It’s very hard — especially when two people meet from different sides of the world. But whenever I meet someone and have a boatmance with them, I’m always looking for The One. And definitely Bri and I were matching each other’s energy, so we click and we get along. You have to wait and see but we are definitely on the right track as long as I pick up my game,” Harry concluded.
