Tantoo Cardinal Honored at Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada Awards

Tantoo Cardinal to Receive Equity in Entertainment Award

On May 29, Tantoo Cardinal will be honored with the Equity in Entertainment Award during The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Canada gala, scheduled to take place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Toronto.

A Celebration of Indigenous Heritage

This prestigious recognition, presented in collaboration with the Indigenous Screen Office, acknowledges Cardinal’s significant impact on the entertainment industry, particularly given her roots in Cree and Métis heritage. With a remarkable career spanning over five decades, Cardinal has an impressive filmography that includes acclaimed titles such as Dances With Wolves, Killers of the Flower Moon, Legends of the Fall, Black Robe, and Hold the Dark.

Television Contributions

In addition to her film work, she has made her mark on television with roles in notable series like Longmire, Echo, Stumptown, Three Pines, Godless, Blackstone, Moccasin Flats, and North of 60. Her contributions to Canadian culture and arts were further recognized in 2009 when she was named a member of the Order of Canada, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

About the Equity in Entertainment Award

Established in 2016, the Equity in Entertainment Award celebrates individuals who amplify the narratives of marginalized communities. Originally part of the Women in Entertainment annual event in Los Angeles, this award underscores the importance of diversity in storytelling.

Notable Past Recipients

Past awardees in the United States include prominent figures such as Selena Gomez, Kerry Washington, Issa Rae, and Amy Pascal. Last year, the inaugural Equity in Entertainment Canada Award was presented to filmmaker Deepa Mehta at the first WIE Canada Awards. This year’s event promises to continue honoring the contributions of women leading the Canadian entertainment industry across television, film, and music.

Looking Forward

Following the success of the inaugural WIE Canada summit held on May 30, 2024, which featured renowned Canadian entertainers like Lilly Singh, Nia Vardalos, Devery Jacobs, Kim Cattrall, Catherine Reitman, and Jully Black, the upcoming gala aims to further highlight and celebrate the achievements of women making significant strides in the industry.
