Disney+ Accelerates the Adventure: Percy Jackson and the Olympians Renewed for Season 3
Disney+ has officially announced a third season for the hit series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on Rick Riordan’s beloved book series. This decision to renew the show comes notably before the premiere of its second season, which is slated to debut in December, two years following the highly anticipated first season.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, expressed excitement about the continued journey of Percy Jackson, stating, “From the moment Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted, it was clear this series had struck a chord with fans of all ages. We’re thrilled to announce that Percy’s journey will continue with a third season.” She extended her gratitude towards the talented cast, creative team, and 20th Television partners, acknowledging their impressive work in bringing Riordan’s magical universe to life.
The early renewal not only demonstrates Disney’s commitment to the franchise but also permits the creative team to commence writing for the third season sooner. Co-showrunner Jonathan E. Steinberg remarked on the proactive approach towards developing future episodes in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, emphasizing the desire to maintain momentum: “Part of wanting to keep the process going is trying to do whatever we can to be ready for it…”
Season three will adapt The Titan’s Curse, the third installment of Riordan’s series, which introduces the beloved character Nico di Angelo, a young demigod making his debut at Camp Half-Blood. Rick Riordan expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This third season will be new territory for the screen, bringing fan favorites like the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo to life for the first time.” His comments highlight the dedication of Disney+ to cater to the passionate fanbase.
As the first season vies for 16 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards—ceremonies scheduled for Saturday—it has shown a strong performance in viewership, surpassing all Disney+ content except for the Marvel and Star Wars franchises. This impressive popularity underscores the show’s appeal amongst audiences worldwide.
Season two will feature returning stars such as Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, and Charlie Bushnell, alongside new faces including Tamara Smart, Andra Day, and Courtney B. Vance, who will portray Zeus, succeeding the late Lance Reddick. This blend of talent is poised to deliver a captivating on-screen experience for fans.
Under the leadership of Riordan and Steinberg, the series promises to maintain its engaging storytelling as showrunners alongside Dan Shotz. The production team also includes a dynamic group of executive producers dedicated to bringing Riordan’s vision to life with a fresh perspective.
