Carrie-Anne Moss Explains Why Prioritizing Motherhood Over Movie Roles Was an Easy Decision

Carrie-Anne Moss Reflects on Prioritizing Motherhood Over Career

Carrie-Anne Moss has expressed no regrets regarding her choice to prioritize motherhood over her acting career during a pivotal time in her life. In a candid interview with The Independent, the iconic actress shared her reflections on the significant decisions she made during her ascent in Hollywood.

Choosing Family Over Fame

During the height of the The Matrix franchise’s success, which catapulted her career into the spotlight, Moss chose to step away from the camera to embrace motherhood. “After The Matrix was such a big deal, I took a big, big break to have children and be with them,”she divulged. This period of reflection revealed her inner conflict, as she recalled feeling torn by lucrative offers coming her way. “I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, I’m getting offered such great things. That would be such a huge deal,'” she said.

However, in a moment of clarity while holding her child, Moss realized what truly mattered to her. “At the end of my life, will it matter to me that I have another movie on my résumé? Or will it matter to me that I held my baby?” she recalled. Her immediate response was a definitive no, leading her to embrace her role as a mother without regret.

The Return to Acting

Although she took a break from high-profile roles, Moss eventually returned to acting, reprising her famous character Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections in 2021. However, the film’s simultaneous release on streaming platforms like HBO Max alongside theatrical screenings affected its box office performance. Reflecting on this release strategy, she noted, “It was an odd time. But I really don’t spend too much time thinking about what people think of things… you only have control over your own experience.” Moss described the filming of The Matrix Resurrections as a “gift,”showing her enduring love for the craft.

A Balancing Act

In addition to her vibrant career in film, Moss is also a dedicated mother to three children—two sons and a daughter—with her husband, Steven Roy. Since resuming her acting career, she has taken on a variety of roles in acclaimed series such as Jessica Jones, Tell Me a Story, Wisting, The Acolyte, and FUBAR, showcasing her versatility as an actress.

Moss’s journey highlights the delicate balance many women navigate between personal fulfillment and professional ambition, promoting a message of empowerment and the importance of making choices that resonate with one’s values.
