Amazon MGM Studios Announces Upcoming Biopic on Tiger Woods
Amazon MGM Studios is set to embark on an exciting new project: a biographical film focusing on the life and career of golf legend Tiger Woods. The production will be backed by Higher Ground, the production company founded by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, which is currently in discussions to produce the film.
Bringing “The Tiger Slam”to the Big Screen
The studio has acquired the film rights to Kevin Cook’s critically acclaimed book, The Tiger Slam. Notably, Reinaldo Marcus Green, the director well-known for his work on “King Richard,”is in negotiations to lead the film adaptation. Additionally, Winkler Films will be collaborating in the production process, ensuring a strong team is in place to bring this story to life.
A Deep Dive into Tiger Woods’ Early Triumphs
In The Tiger Slam, Cook, a former senior editor for Sports Illustrated and ex-editor in chief of Golf Magazine, offers readers an intimate exploration of Woods’ dominating victories during the early stages of his professional golfing career. Through insights derived from Woods’ caddie, coaches, competitors, and supportive figures, the book provides an engaging narrative about his unparalleled achievements.
Challenges and Comebacks
However, the biopic will not shy away from the challenges Woods encountered after reaching the pinnacle of his sport. The narrative includes the profound struggles he faced following the death of his father, Earl Woods, the fallout from personal issues, including sex addiction, and injuries resulting from intense physical demands on the golf course. These elements contributed significantly to his tumultuous journey.
The Ongoing Legacy of Tiger Woods
After his extraordinary rise, Woods has made several attempts to return to the professional golfing scene. Despite his indomitable spirit, he continues to wrestle with ongoing injuries and a series of surgeries, preventing a seamless comeback.
Kevin Cook’s Literary Acclaim
This is not Cook’s first venture into film adaptations. His previous work, Tommy’s Honor, which chronicles the lives of golf’s foundational figures, Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris, was adapted into a film that won the BAFTA for Best Feature Film in Scotland in 2016. This history suggests that the upcoming Tiger Woods biopic may also resonate with audiences and critics alike.
Kevin Cook is represented by CAA and David Halpern at David Halpern Literary Management. His book, The Tiger Slam, is published by Avid Reader Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
