Wendy Williams Hospitalized Amid Guardianship Concerns
On March 10, 2025, police officers from the NYPD transported former talk show host Wendy Williams to a local hospital after responding to distress signals from her Manhattan assisted living facility. Reports from The New York Post indicated that Williams had dropped alarming notes reading, “Help! Wendy!!”from her apartment window, which prompted the authorities to conduct a welfare check.
The NYPD confirmed to People magazine that Williams was taken by ambulance for evaluation. The 60-year-old media personality has been under a court-ordered guardianship since May 2022, with her guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, claiming that Williams suffers from cognitive impairments resulting from dementia and aphasia.
Wendy’s Stance on Her Guardianship
Williams has publicly disputed the assertions regarding her mental capacity. In a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, she expressed feelings of entrapment within her living situation, highlighting constraints such as locked elevators and limited visitations.
According to the NYPD’s official statement to People, she was escorted from the premises for health evaluation.
“She was then escorted out of the building, and EMS transported her in an ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation,”the NYPD statement read.
Since May 2022, Williams has been under a legal guardianship that oversees her health choices and finances. Her guardian, Morrisey, filed legal documents characterizing Williams as permanently disabled and incapable of making her own decisions, which followed a professional diagnosis of dementia and aphasia in 2023.
Unveiling the Confinement Conditions
During a January 2025 appearance on The Breakfast Club, Williams remarked on her living environment:
“I’m in this place with people who are in their 90s and their 80s and their 70s…These people, there’s something wrong with these people here on this floor. I am clearly not.”
She further articulated her discontent with the facility’s protocols, including elevators that are locked and visitor restrictions. Williams voiced concerns about her medications being administered without her awareness or consent.
In a February interview on NewsNation’s Banfield, she elaborated on her experience, noting her location on “the fifth floor”and referring to the area as “the memory unit” designed for those suffering from severe memory loss. She shared feelings of suffocation from the situation.
“They call it ‘the memory unit,’ so it’s for people who don’t remember anything. I’ve met the people who live here and I’ve been here for almost a year now, and this is very suffocating,”she shared.
Family Concerns and Legal Actions
Williams’ family has raised concerns about her care and the challenges they face in maintaining regular contact. Following her January radio interview, Morrissey filed a request for a “new medical evaluation”of Williams shortly after Williams challenged the legitimacy of her diagnosis publicly.
The difficulties surrounding family visits and communication complicate efforts to independently assess Williams’ well-being, with her expressing distress about missing significant family milestones, including her father’s birthday celebration.
