Minecraft features three distinct dimensions, each encompassing a variety of biomes. Biomes serve as unique regions characterized by specific terrain types, block compositions, climates, and wildlife. New players generally start their journey in common biomes such as Forest, Beach, Desert, or Plains. However, among these, certain biomes are exceptionally elusive within the Overworld.
As of 2025, here’s an overview of the five rarest biomes players can encounter in the game.
The Rarest Biomes in Minecraft (2025)
1. Pale Garden

Introducing one of the newest and rarest biomes in Minecraft, the Pale Garden comprises only 0.078% of the Overworld’s surface. This unique forest-like biome is dotted with pale oak trees that resemble dark oak trees in shape and size. Notably, the Pale Garden is often found alongside Dark Oak Forests, indicating their ecological relationship.
A distinctive feature of the pale oak trees is the presence of the creaking heart block, which can spawn a new hostile mob, the creaking, during the night, adding an extra layer of challenge for players.
2. Windswept Gravelly Hills

Another rarity is the Windswept Gravelly Hills, which only makes up 0.103% of the surface in the Overworld. This biome was previously known as Gravelly Mountains before the 1.18 update, and its roots date back to the earlier Extreme Hills M biome. Characterized by layers of gravel, this region has limited vegetation, with few flowers or trees scattered among its rocky terrain.
3. Stony Peaks

Coming in at third place, Stony Peaks also accounts for 0.103% of the Overworld’s biome diversity. This mountainous region is predominantly composed of stone blocks and occasionally features strips of calcite, giving it a unique geological structure. Stony Peaks typically borders warmer biomes such as Savannahs and Jungles, showing Minecraft’s diverse topography.
4. Mushroom Fields

Ranked as the fourth rarest, the Mushroom Fields biome takes up just 0.145% of the Overworld, and its formation is particularly distinctive. Unlike other biomes, it exists as isolated islands completely surrounded by ocean, devoid of connections to other land biomes. This area is abundant in mycelium blocks and large mushrooms, and only the friendly red mooshrooms inhabit it. Interestingly, no hostile mobs appear here, even during nighttime, making it an oasis of safety for players.
5. Frozen Peaks

Finally, we have Frozen Peaks, another rare mountain biome that comprises roughly 0.157% of the Overworld. As suggested by its name, this region is characterized by snow and ice blocks, often found adjacent to biomes like Plains and Taigas. Inhabited primarily by goats, this biome also serves as a habitat for various hostile mobs, adding a level of challenge for explorers.
