The episode, titled “Make It Secret,”draws from manga chapters 49 and 50, as it starts with Nene throwing open the school gates, hoping to escape with Hanako. Yet, Hanako hesitates, asserting his identity as Amane and voicing his enjoyment of this simulated existence.

Despite Hanako’s attempts to persuade her to stay, Nene remains resolute, insisting that the person she cares for isn’t present in this world. Their exchange takes on a humorous tone before Nene successfully convinces Hanako to follow her out. Unbeknownst to them, Shijima is observing their departure.

As Nene devises a plan to reach the edge of the fabricated realm, she believes that boundaries must exist. However, their attempts to board public transport reveal that all passersby are actually variations of Shijima, provoking horror in Nene.

The Role of the Floating Brush: Hope Turns to Despair

Struggling with the oppressive presence of Shijima, Nene seeks solace in a park. Overwhelmed, she finds comfort in Hanako, who manages to convince her to return to the school premises.

The plot thickens when a floating paintbrush introduces itself as an ally, proposing to reveal a potentially safe exit from their current reality. Initially skeptical, Nene’s fear increases as another Shijima figure appears. However, the brush swiftly eliminates this apparition, securing Nene’s trust and hinting at a door that leads back to the real world.

Just as the brush is about to provide vital information about the exit, Hanako intervenes, destroying it and knocking Nene unconscious before carrying her back to the school.

As Hanako prepares to strike, Mitsuba intervenes protectively, but Hanako is unperturbed and declares that he has secured his most crucial asset—Nene. Transforming into his School Wonder form, he initially elicits a jubilant reaction from Kou, who believes they can easily break free from the fabricated reality. Mitsuba, however, senses an underlying issue and intervenes.

It’s then that Kou confronts Hanako, demanding explanations. Hanako reveals the grim truth of their existence: this false world defies the conventional laws of life and death, and here, he aims to keep Nene to save her from her predetermined demise within a year in the real world.
