A Heartfelt Connection to the Bibas Family Tragedy

It’s remarkable how deeply one can feel for others, especially when it comes to the innocence of children. The harrowing story of Yarden and Shiri Bibas, alongside their young children Ariel and Kfir, has resonated profoundly with me since the events of October 7, 2023. My thoughts and prayers have been with them, as I held on to the hope that there might be a glimmer of hope amidst their tragedy.

The Unthinkable Loss

Two weeks ago, the nation mourned as Shiri, 4-year-old Ariel, and 9-month-old Kfir were returned from their captivity in Gaza. Their funeral was one of the darkest days in Israel’s history, illustrating the collective sorrow of a nation. I learned from Ari Ingel, representing Creative Community for Peace, that Yarden, the only survivor of his family’s ordeal, intended to play my song “Hold on to Memories”at the service. I was taken aback by this revelation.

Finding Strength in Music

My heart swelled with honor, knowing that my music would serve as a source of comfort during such a profound moment of grief. I spoke with Yarden the following day, expressing my sorrow and support for him during such a devastating time. I offered him my contact information, friendship, and VIP access to any future performances. I was touched when I learned that our conversation brought him a smile after days of anguish.

A Symbol of Collective Grief

The Bibas family has become emblematic of the pain and struggles faced by many within the Jewish community. Their loss reflects a broader narrative of suffering, ongoing persecution, and resilience. The world’s reaction—or lack thereof—to the abhorrent events of October 7, especially regarding the suffering of babies, has left many, including myself, bewildered.

A Call for Courage and Awareness

It is frustrating to witness a silence from many influential figures, particularly in Hollywood, who shy away from voicing their stance on contemporary antisemitism. During the recent Academy Awards, Adrien Brody bravely highlighted this issue while accepting his Oscar, visibly shaken not just by the honor but also by the potential backlash for addressing such topics openly. This atmosphere can create apprehension, making it challenging for individuals to speak out against injustices, particularly when they involve the Jewish identity.

The Choice to Stand Against Hatred

Historically, Jews have been unfairly vilified, serving as scapegoats for various societal issues. Amidst these challenges, the existence of Israel provides a means of self-defense against the brutality that was so openly displayed on October 7. The cycle of violence and indoctrination of hatred must end for there to be any hope of lasting peace in the region.

The Inspiration Behind “Hold on to Memories”

“Hold on to Memories”drew inspiration from the poignant film *Coco* and its powerful theme related to the Day of the Dead. It emphasizes love, memory, and the enduring connections that bind us to our loved ones. Initially, the song was a tribute to friends we’ve lost over the years, including Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell. But in this current context, its meaning has intensified.

The Healing Power of Music

Music possesses an extraordinary ability to transport listeners back to pivotal moments in their lives. Its magic lies in evoking emotions that can bring solace in suffering. Knowing that the song resonated with Yarden and provided him some comfort amid his loss has been immensely fulfilling. I sincerely hope that he continues to hold onto the memories of Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir, allowing their love to guide him through this heart-wrenching journey.

Final Thoughts

I want to express my heartfelt condolences to Yarden and to all affected by this tragedy. As we remember those who have been lost, may we find strength in community, music, and the shared resolve to combat hatred and violence in all its forms.
