As you embark on your journey in Divinity: Original Sin 2, one of the first significant hurdles you will encounter is finding a way to escape Fort Joy. This location serves as a prison, and discovering the various escape routes is essential for efficient dungeon navigation and ultimately achieving your freedom.
Throughout Fort Joy, you will find several NPCs who can offer insights into different escape methods—ranging from lockpicking and using hidden passages to stealthily bypassing guards. If you find yourself stuck, this comprehensive guide will assist you in breaking free from Fort Joy.
All Ways Of Escaping Fort Joy In Divinity: Original Sin 2

Freedom from Fort Joy can be achieved through a combination of five sub-quests, each presenting unique opportunities to escape. Below is a breakdown of these quests:
- Follow Your Own Path: This main quest is automatically added to your journal and encourages you to devise your own escape plan.
- Leaving Hand In Hand: Engaging with Gawin, a mage located in the western region of Fort Joy, will unlock this quest. He offers an escape route if you retrieve the Gloves of Teleportation after dealing with Saltwater Crocodiles.
- The Path Of The Soul: Assist Lord Withermoore, a cursed Source Hunter, and he will aid your escape once you help break his curse.
- The Path Of Common Knowledge: By collaborating with Griff or Saheila to rescue Amyro from imprisonment, you’ll uncover additional methods to reach the dungeon beneath Fort Joy.
- The Path Of Greatest Resistance: This intricate quest involves multiple NPC interactions to gain access to the underground prison blocks and eventually escape the fort.
Follow Your Own Path Quest
Choosing to escape Fort Joy independently requires you to engage in thorough exploration and battle formidable foes. Your goal here is to navigate toward the underground holding cells, picking locks and ultimately lowering a bridge to facilitate your exit.
Be prepared for challenging encounters. It is advisable to equip your party with diverse characters and ample weaponry to tackle the dangers that lie ahead.
Leaving Hand In Hand Quest

To initiate the Leaving Hand in Hand quest, locate Gawin in the western area of Fort Joy, not far from the camps. He will inform you that he can assist your escape, provided you deal with nearby Saltwater Crocodiles and acquire the Gloves of Teleportation.
Once you have obtained the gloves, return to Gawin, who will lead you to an alcove but will betray you. However, with the gloves in hand, you can teleport your group across obstacles, allowing you to access the bridge that leads out of the fort.
The Path Of The Soul Quest

Start this quest by conversing with a child named Mody in the cavern south of Fort Joy Square, who requests to play hide and seek. After the game, Mody will guide you to a hatch that leads underground.
In the subterranean area, you’ll encounter another child and an undead guard named Lord Withermoore, who reveals he’s been cursed for centuries. To earn his assistance in escaping, you’ll need to locate and destroy his soul jar. Completing this quest opens access to the dungeon below Fort Joy but does not provide additional support for your escape efforts.
The Path Of Common Knowledge Quest

Choosing to follow the Path of Common Knowledge entails assisting Saheila in rescuing Amyro, who is imprisoned by camp boss Griff on dubious theft allegations. Engage with Amyro to understand his plight—he is innocent.
Your options include finding the true thief or confronting Griff directly to free Amyro. Regardless of your chosen approach, after his release, Amyro will help you by indicating another hatch leading to the underground dungeon, where you’ll need to rely on your skills to navigate and find an escape route.
The Path Of Greatest Resistance Quest

This quest is potentially the most complex of the five available routes for escape. It automatically begins when you witness the execution of Atusa upon arriving at the beach.
To progress in this quest, locate Delorus, a deviant Magister, held in the dungeons below Fort Joy. Accessing him involves battling several aggressive magisters. After successfully rescuing Delorus, he will give you a password to use on other magisters interrogating a child named Han. Assisting Han will lead you to a boat that facilitates your escape from Fort Joy.
The Quickest Way To Escape Fort Joy

If your priority is to exit Fort Joy swiftly, disregarding specific quests and rewards, consider the following method:
- Upon landing at Fort Joy beach, head straight to Fort Joy Square at the center of the map. Interact with the statue of Lucian to find a hidden button that unlocks access to the underground hatch. Ensure your character possesses at least 11 Wits to locate this button.
- After interacting with the hatch, descend into the holding cells and move north until you encounter several magisters interrogating a deviant magister, Delorus. Near this area, there is a stool holding a prison key. Make sure to quick save, then stealthily approach to grab the key.
- Retrace your steps but do not go back to the start—veer westward to unlock a door using the prison key.
-
You are close to exiting the fort. The next area houses several magisters and High Judge Orivand. You have the option to avoid confrontation by sneaking past these formidable foes.
- If you opt to stay stealthy, separate your party and sneak one by one along the western balcony towards the outer wall and a ladder. Successfully reaching the ladder triggers an update in your quest log, confirming your escape from the fort.
This escape strategy can be completed in roughly five minutes, though it comes at the cost of missing valuable side quests, potential companions, gear, and experience points. Utilize this approach judiciously, considering what you are willing to forgo.
