Marvel Executive and Anthony Mackie Discuss Title Change and Reshoots for Captain America: Brave New World

The Title Transformation of Captain America: Brave New World

In a recent discussion, key figures from Marvel Studios—including Anthony Mackie, who plays Captain America, Harrison Ford of Red Hulk fame, and studio executive Nate Moore—shared insights into the decision-making process behind changing the title of the upcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World. Originally announced as “Captain America: New World Order”alongside Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, this shift in title hints at deeper narrative reflections while stepping away from potentially sensitive political implications.

Initial Title and Its Implications

When Marvel Studios first introduced its plans for Phase 5, the title “New World Order”suggested political intrigue that resonated with the character’s journey and the anticipated storyline. However, details surrounding the movie’s antagonists and plot remained undisclosed, leaving much to speculation about its thematic focus.

Behind the Title Change

In an interview with Empire, Nate Moore elaborated on why the original subtitle was ultimately deemed unsuitable. He noted that while the title was intended to evoke a sense of intrigue, it inadvertently echoed real-world connotations that led to discomfort among audiences. Moore emphasized that Marvel seeks to create stories that feel relatable without mirroring current events directly.

Nate Moore: “I think ‘New World Order’ was a title we thought was really interesting, and sort of moody and scary. And to be quite honest, some of the feedback we got, internally and externally, was that that phrase has, unfortunately, been co-opted in the real world in a way that made people uncomfortable. We never try to tell stories that feel ripped from the headlines. The best we can do is try and anchor our stories in a world that feels real. And sometimes fiction and non-fiction line up in unexpected and unintended ways.”

A Light-Hearted Take from Harrison Ford

Adding humor to the discussion, Harrison Ford pointed out the fictional nature of their narrative. He jested that while the blurring of reality and fiction is common in their stories, no U.S. President has yet undergone a transformation into a character like the Hulk. Ford asserted that the focus of the film will center on personal battles and character growth, rather than on a commentary of real-life politics.

Harrison Ford: “Any resemblance to US Presidents living or dead is entirely coincidental, in other words. So far, we have not had a President who can transform into a Hulk. We have not faced these kinds of circumstances in our political life, although we’ve had enough of a glimpse of the range of political life to realize that we could really end up in a political Marvel movie. But that’s not what this is about. This is about one man trying to deal with his own history, with his own temperament, with his own circumstances.”

Clarifications from Anthony Mackie

In response to speculation regarding the film’s production and narrative direction, Anthony Mackie reassured fans that the reshoots for Brave New World were not designed to overhaul the storyline. Reflecting on his experiences in previous MCU films, Mackie explained the typical nature of reshoots, emphasizing that they refine rather than redefine the original vision of the movie.

“It wasn’t retooled at all. Every Marvel movie I’ve done has done reshoots, so it’s not retooling or remaking. You basically get the movie and the story you want, you edit it together, then go back and shoot a few more scenes.”
