$315,000 Worth of Trading Cards Stolen from Grading Company by Thieves

Recent Theft of Pokémon Cards: A Growing Concern

  • Over $315,000 in Pokémon cards were stolen from Ace Grading.
  • The firm is proactively contacting customers to facilitate compensation claims.
  • In response to the heist, Ace Grading is enhancing its security protocols.

A significant theft has occurred at Ace Grading, a leading card grading company, where thieves made off with over $315,000 worth of Pokémon TCG and other trading cards. This surge in card value, particularly for graded collectibles, has attracted criminal interest, underscoring the vulnerability of businesses and their clients alike.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in criminal activity targeting collectible cards, correlating with the renewed popularity of Pokémon and similar franchises. In a shocking incident last July, over $1 million worth of Pokémon cards was stolen from a warehouse, highlighting a troubling trend where collectors and now grading companies are falling victim to theft.

On December 13, 2024, Ace Grading confirmed the incident, describing it as the work of professional thieves. Local law enforcement verified that the stolen goods had an estimated value of approximately £250,000 (about $315,000). Interestingly, since Ace Grading mainly acts as a custodian for cards sent in by customers, the stolen items belong to individual collectors. This insight likely contributed to the firm becoming an appealing target for thieves, as well-graded cards can command extraordinarily high prices in the market. For instance, a Japanese Dark Charizard, graded at PSA 10, can exceed $1,090, while its ungraded counterpart might only garner a fraction of that amount.

Compensation for Affected Customers

In light of the incident, Ace Grading has begun reaching out to customers affected by the theft to provide guidance on how to claim compensation. The company has reportedly assessed the fair market value of each stolen card and will base reimbursements on these valuations. There have been instances in the past where law enforcement has apprehended card thieves, and there is hope that similar outcomes will occur in this situation. Additionally, Ace Grading is actively taking steps to bolster its security measures to deter future incidents.

With the increasing value of trading cards, it’s clear why they are a target for criminals. High-value pulls can yield thousands of dollars, leading to desperate measures for acquisition. Reports suggest corporate theft has occurred even before cards reach the retail market. This escalating issue emphasizes the need for card owners and handlers to implement all possible security measures to safeguard these prized possessions.
