Dynamite’s Thundercats Revival: A Phenomenal Success
Honoring the Original Spirit While Innovating
Dynamite’s latest Thundercats title has emerged as one of the standout achievements of 2024, with its premier issue exceeding 100,000 copies sold before official release. Acclaimed writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss have captured the essence of the original series while injecting a contemporary flair. The gradual introduction of nostalgic elements, like Snarf and the iconic Thundertank, has been met with enthusiasm from long-time fans. Notably, Snarf’s portrayal has suggested a richer backstory than previously imagined, adding intriguing depth to the character.
Unveiling the Stories of Obscure Characters
The characters featured in Thundercats: Lost—Bengali, Lynx-O, and Pumyra—are notably from the latter parts of the original animated series and may not be recognized by casual fans. Their inclusion aims to elevate their status and demonstrate that they can captivate audiences just as well as iconic figures like Lion-O and Tygra. Maintaining the series’ expansion ethos, Brisson and Lobosco introduce new characters who will surely resonate with readers.
A New Tone and Higher Stakes in Thundercats: Lost
Embracing Dark Themes in a Unique Setting
Diving into a markedly different tone, Thundercats: Lost will explore darker themes compared to its mainline counterpart. Brisson has alluded to the team’s perilous “secret mission,” indicating that not every character may emerge unscathed. This heightened emotional and narrative intensity adds complexity to the storyline, creating a realm where previously lesser-known characters may face ultimate tests of survival.
The world that the ThunderCats: Lost team have ventured into is very different from where our mainline ThunderCats are, and the trials and tribulations that they face as a result are unique to this series — though just as exciting and deadly. They find themselves trapped in a highly militarized zone, in a world that eschews magic in favor of hyper-advanced technology. This world is ruled with an iron fist, under a cruel dictator with an innate hatred of cats — so much so that they’re hellbent on stamping out this cat invasion before it can take root. The villains they face will be familiar to Thundercats fans, but you’ll have to read to find out just who they’re up against.
While the primary adversaries appear to remain Mumm-Ra and the Mu’Tants, other previous villains could also emerge as significant threats in this new series, with Dynamite’s revitalization enabling a fresh take on classic antagonists like Mole Master from Thundercats: Apex.
