Helldivers 2 Guide: Acquiring the Fast Recon Vehicle (FRV)

Quick Navigation

The long-awaited arrival of drivable vehicles in Helldivers 2 has finally come to fruition with the recent Omens of Tyranny update. Among the significant additions is the Fast Recon Vehicle (FRV), a lightweight armored scout car crafted to enhance player mobility during missions considerably.

The introduction of the FRV is one of the most celebrated updates, fulfilling a longstanding request from the game community. However, it is essential to note that while the FRV offers exciting possibilities, it is not yet positioned to supersede the best stratagem options available in Helldivers 2. Fortunately, players can still acquire a free jeep—provided they know the right strategies to find one.

Currently, players can locate the Fast Recon Vehicle—commonly referred to as the Jeep—on in-game maps rather than receiving it through stratagem drops. To find the FRV, players should open their maps and look for the FRV icon. These vehicles typically appear soon after your initial landing, so it’s advisable to coordinate with your team to locate and secure one promptly.

While not officially confirmed, there is a strong possibility that the Fast Recon Vehicle will soon transition into a deployable stratagem, similar to the Exosuits. According to the PlayStation Blog regarding the Omens of Tyranny update, players can acquire their own drivable jeep by continuing to engage with the upcoming Major Orders. If this holds true, the FRV may well be added to the ship’s catalog for easy accessibility or even available for free in your arsenal.

Evaluating the FRV

At this point, the primary function of the Fast Recon Vehicle lies in its transportation capabilities. It comfortably accommodates the entire squad, and those riding in the back are granted access to the mounted heavy machine gun (HMG). This turret operates similarly to the handheld weapons that players can deploy—offering power, albeit with a challenging rate of fire due to the inherent kickback and slower handling.

However, there are advantages to using the FRV. Passengers have the opportunity to utilize their own weapons while leaning out of the vehicle, presenting a unique method to engage enemies. Although hitting targets while moving can be tricky, weapons like the Commando, which features laser-guided missiles, can help mitigate this challenge. Moreover, explosive and Arc weapons are ideal since they require minimal aiming, while energy arms like the Sickle and Laser Cannon provide the added benefit of no ammo constraints.

It is crucial to remember that the FRV is susceptible to enemy fire. Excessive damage can lead to its destruction, and shots to the tires may compromise its maneuverability significantly. Additionally, if passengers are firing from inside the vehicle, they risk inadvertently impacting each other with friendly fire.
