35 Years Ago, Metallica and Guns N’ Roses Created the Ultimate Hard Rock Supergroup for a Legendary One-Time Concert

Unveiling The Gak: A Rock Supergroup’s Fleeting Legacy

Collaborative projects in music often encapsulate a unique blend of creativity, transforming imaginative concepts into exhilarating realities. Throughout rock history, numerous bands have sparked momentary brilliance, only to fade away shortly after, yet few can rival the legendary mystique attached to these extraordinary, transient supergroups. The unprecedented collision of styles, egos, and artistic genius creates unforgettable musical moments, if only for a brief time before they retreat into the annals of myth.

While some of these endeavors are ephemeral experiments, others subtly leave a profound impact on the music landscape, often unnoticed by the wider public. The stories of chaotic yet exhilarating gatherings of musicians remain embedded in rock lore. But how many such bands can you remember that made a fleeting appearance without leaving a significant mark?

Who Were The Gak?

Watch The Gak Performance

The Gak was an electrifying assembly of musicians from Metallica and Guns N’ Roses, manifesting more as a moment of sheer inspiration than a planned event. This spontaneous unity saw two groundbreaking bands, navigating similar rock circles, come together at a Hollywood party.

The heartbeat of The Gak pulsed through the iconic frontmen Axl Rose and James Hetfield. They were joined by Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach, while the legendary guitarists Slash and Kirk Hammett showcased their prowess. The rhythm section comprised Guns N’ Roses’ bassist Duff McKagan and Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich, forming a formidable rock powerhouse that remains etched in memory.

The Short-Lived Existence of The Gak

The legend of The Gak was born during RIP Magazine editor Lonn Friend’s notorious parties. The fourth annual event held on November 9, 1990, at the Palladium was the site of The Gak’s brief but memorable performance. While they prepared very little for their set, fans experienced a cover of Nazareth’s “Hair of the Dog,”alongside intricate renditions of classic songs, including Skid Row’s “Piece of Me,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Guns N’ Roses’ “You’re Crazy.”

This show served as a precursor of sorts to Metallica’s stadium tour with Guns N’ Roses in 1992 — a series of concerts that sometimes eclipsed the chaos of the RIP party (via UCR).

This wild night marked an unforgettable chapter in rock history. Yet, despite its chaos, it would pale in comparison to the infamous 1992 “Live N’ Loud” tour that spurred a fierce rivalry and effectively ended any chances for The Gak’s revival. As the rock scene evolved with the emergence of new bands like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden at future RIP parties, this one-night wonder remains celebrated—an improbable jewel in the heart of hard rock.
