Join the Celebration of 45 Years of Cinematic Magic
A special screening commemorating the 45th anniversary of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back will herald the commencement of the 16th TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 24, as announced by Turner Classic Movies. Notably, the visionary behind the Star Wars universe, George Lucas, will grace the occasion with his presence.
Significance of The Empire Strikes Back
Ben Mankiewicz, TCM’s primetime anchor and festival host, shared his insights on the film’s monumental impact: “The Empire Strikes Back is a sequel akin to The Godfather Part II. While it is the second chapter in a series, it transcends typical sequel status. Not only did it captivate Star Wars enthusiasts, but it also advanced the art of filmmaking, enriching character depth and broadening the most beloved cinematic universe of all time.” He emphasized how the original film in 1977 sparked a new Hollywood era, fervently engaging a generation of movie fans, and how Empire, arriving three years later, showcased an extraordinary achievement in the realm of cinema.
Honoring Industry Legends
During this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival, taking place from April 24 to April 27, George Stevens Jr., a noteworthy filmmaker and founder of the American Film Institute, will receive the prestigious Robert Osborne Award. This accolade celebrates individuals committed to preserving the cultural legacy of classic films for future audiences. Additionally, Stevens will unveil the Hollywood premiere of the 4K restoration of George Stevens: A Filmmaker’s Journey, a remarkable documentary he both wrote and directed, chronicling the life of his Oscar-winning father.
